There are probably genetic traits that influence laziness, but I'd put it more down to diet than anything else. The better you eat, the more energy you have, the more you feel like doing.

My dog eats his own poo. Given that, thinking about what else he might get up to is enough to deter me from ever laying mouth upon him - no matter how many gallons of blood I've lost.

From your description your friend doesn't exactly sound like an empathetic or understanding kind of person.
