A Mars bar won't do the trick you have to eat a Snickers. Actually I was wondering what the effect of stimulants would be on the number of available spoons. That would make an interesting study. My guess is that overall, amphetamine would do the trick wonderfully in the short term, but that i...

"Never let the perfect be the enemy of the good."

I have aided the perfect in ravaging the good enough so many times I'm surprised I can still recall the phrase.

I feel that. Nicely put.

Remind them occasionally that you get to pick the nursing home if you can't cut it, so it is in their best interests to help you up rather than dog you down. Pun intended. :)

Welcome to Wrong Planet KaitEli. Temper tantrums are manipulative behaviors. Autistic meltdowns are the result of stress of living in a world not designed for autistics. Often meltdowns are caused by a buildup of stressors. It may be a minor thing that you do not recognize that puts you over the ed...

"If you've ever felt scapegoated, outcast, or ostracized" Paraphrase: "I woke up this morning." Homo sapiens, like almost all primates, are tribal. That means we are genetically driven to subjugate what we think in order to fit in with others, and this drive is powerful. I do not...

No, but masking does.

That's a double edged sword because now that I am in my fifties, I'm good at it but so exhausted the mask slips whenever I get over-stressed.

Abusive is a subset of toxic, and there is a lot of overlap in the two circles.

To my teenage daughter, I am "My socially awkward Dad." Her socially awkward Dad is loved, respected, and valued. My daughter is the best thing that ever happened to me and the most difficult. Not mutually exclusive. I was terrified I would fail. I think that's universal even among neuroty...

You're not alone. Let me add one to your noteworthy list. Masochist Better than cutting. :( On my easier said than done list, I would respectfully suggest the almost but not quite impossible task of developing more coping skills. Chair workouts. No dogs, no cars. No equipment. It helps with energy a...

I don't think a lot of people can mask so well that it becomes undetectable. I'm in my fifties, and I'm as good at masking as anyone, good enough that I now have to inform my coworkers about my limitations or they don't see them. Even so, a psychiatrist can pick it up in a few minutes. But in princi...

My initial reaction was one of: "Why me? - Some atypical gene finds its way into my makeup, and puts me through all kinds of anguish, and derails my life time and time again! - It's not fair!" But, then again I could have had MD, ALS - or any other of a host of debilitating diseases. And ...

I found my niche but the wheels fell off it. '23 was the worst year of my life. You're not alone. For fourteen years I thought I had a corporate home, and then I didn't. Five more years and multiple jobs go by, I'm feeling lost, and then I find another. Seven years into that, and it seems like the ...

At 53, I have learned to mask so well that most of my colleagues do not know I am autistic until I tell them. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's easier to hold down a job. On the other, my colleagues don't understand the enormous effort I make just to appear normal. They don't under...

Because like almost every primate on earth, homo sapiens are tribal. If you don't look like you belong, the tribe tends to bully you. When I was seven years old, I concluded that I would either have to learn to shut-up, or fight. Now, at 53, I'm a seriously tough nerd. I'm not saying my solution is ...
