It is telling that your son does not notice that he's going. That really says to me that this is not an easily fixed issue. I am not sure this is something he can cognitively control himself. But perhaps his body can be tricked into working it into your schedule. Can you first start tracking exactl...

I’ve also tried taking things away, like his tablet or toys, but it only makes things worse. He gets even more upset, starts screaming, and it always ends the same way, with me having to carry him into the bathroom while he’s kicking, hitting, and yelling the whole time. He's going to throw a tantr...

I'll preface by saying I'm not a parent but I've taken care of my younger siblings when they were really little and I've see other people in my family dealing with their kids before. The doctor's probably right about rushing things. Even if you're successful it can lead to night time issues later. ...

I mean how long does he do this after pooping? like is it really a problem issue...I mean idk if bouncing on the toilet for a bit after pooping makes him feel better about it I guess I don't really see the harm. LIke idk some little kids struggle with potty training and pooping and peeing...but mak...

^yeah perhaps he just doesn't understand the signals and cues Exactly, that’s what his doctor thinks too. I’ve tried reading books to him about how the body works, but he’s just not interested. I’ve also tried asking him about it when I’ve clearly seen he’s pooped, like gently asking if he noticed ...

I believe the most time-consuming part of changing Patrick is loading and unloading him from the chair-lift Otherwise, if you take that away like I said the procedure is really no different than changing a baby's diaper! My mom goes through a similar process as Patrick to change her diaper I think ...

Maybe you can just do away with diapers all together and make him wear training pants or underwear. If he does well and uses the toilet, praise him. If he has an accident, change him or get him to change himself. If he insists on wearing diapers, tell him that he's going to have to clean up his own...

Since he is very high functioning, he is capable of learning consequences. If he won't do potty breaks, maybe leave him in his soiled diaper, leave places when he poops, have him start cleaning himself up. Why isn't he wiping his own ass? He should be changing his own diapers now. He can even rinse...

I totally get how frustrating and exhausting this must be for you. With my nephew, who’s also on the spectrum and struggles with sensory stuff, diaper changes can be a nightmare too, he hates being interrupted and gets really upset. What helped us was making diaper changes super predictable and qui...

Hi YellowRose — I’m not a parent myself, and reading your post honestly reminds me why I chose not to be. It sounds unbelievably tough at times, and I’ve got a lot of respect for how much care and patience you’re showing, even when it must feel never-ending. That’s sad to hear. But there’s also so ...

I just wanted to share an update. The strange new behaviour he sometimes has after he’s pooped, where he sits and kind of rocks or bounces on his bottom, still happens now and then. Some weeks he doesn’t do it at all, other weeks I see it a couple of times. I still don’t really know why he does it. ...

How well is he able to reason and have a conversation with you? And do you have any idea how he views you at this point? Most NT kids come to the realization that being wet and sloppy is unpleasant, so they learn to regulate themselves in these early years. I agree it sounds like he enjoys the sens...

Know a person who kept sucking his thumb until his early teenage years, simply because he enjoyed it. He's a top lawyer now, graduating from his country's top university with an acceptance rate of 4%. People obviously develop at different paces ... It sounds like your son is having a lot of sensory...

It sounds really hard. Without going into too much detail toilet training was (is to an extent) a problem for us too. It can be super stressful because on one hand you want to trust your kid to learn by themselves, but on the other hand society is always pushing parents to "raise the kids asap...

Lately, though, he’s developed a new behaviour after pooping that I really don’t know how to interpret. I’ve seen him sitting and kind of "bouncing" on his bottom (hard to describe), and he laughs like he thinks it’s hilarious Just to be clear, I don't know how your kid really feels, just...

Hi All, I'm a single mom to a 5.5-year-old boy who has autism. Although he’s very high-functioning, he’s still not potty trained and wears diapers full time. I’ve tried potty training him on and off, but he’s never shown any interest or signs that he’s ready. He doesn’t seem to notice when he pees o...
