Surfman, I was worried that by talking about how I feel that I would alienate people, but apparently that's not true. Thank you. When I was dating my then future husband, and I realized that he was knowing "me," not the visualized "Eileen," I got sad because I thought he would leave me because I was...

What is it about bear hugs? Very Happy That was rhetorical, I know what it is about bear hugs. Razz I have always wondered what is a bear hug. In my mind, I see a big bear, hugging me to DEATH, with huge claws digging into my back, then I die. I know that's an autism stereotype about the "literal" ...

Thank you so much. Both my husband and I work from home, so I'm going to his office to get a hug--in true Aspie/Auttie fashion, a super tight hug. :-)

I hadn't realized how ticked I was. I posted on another thread about one of my competitors that was inflaming. But, I'm tired of being bullied. My main thing is to be accepted whether others like it or not. Okay, not that extreme, but having autism has its "challenges and its gifts"--to put it polit...

JenJ, I designed the Cozy Calm weighted blanket, available in some stores and custom made at http://www.CozyCalm.com Cozy Calm weighted blankets I have autism, and I ordered over seven weighted blankets, but frankly, they were far from what I needed. So, I designed my own, for which I now have a pat...

I would not say Social, but Public. I have a lot to respond to about what you wrote, but I'll start with the above quote. I found that being public has been a very odd adjustment for me. As the owner, I am the public figure, the holder of the vision, the communicator of the vision, the enforcer, th...

I was forced into going into business for myself simply because I could not get a job working for someone else. I live in a small town where word of mouth is important. Most of my business has been from people who were referred by family, friends, and acquaintances. That's why I originally went int...

I am finding that there are some unique challenges (and strengths!) that go with being a business owner with Asperger's. (Did Bill Gates have AS?) The social skills are always a difficult one when it comes to management. I am learning as I go what is "appropriate" for a given situation. I have also ...

Yes, the delay I can understand. I need time to take in what I heard. Then it takes time to figure out what to say. This is especially a problem in group situations because by the time I've figured out what to say, the conversation is already on a new topic.

Do you experience confusion if someone is talking too fast? Do you need extra time to process if the topic requires thinking? Do you experience confusion leading to frustration or beyond if someone is talking and there are other stimuli, such as sounds, going on? I am darned curious after reading th...

I want more positive autism awareness, but I want to speak to the people who don't know. I want to do public speaking and get in the media to talk about it, but I'm not quite sure how to go about starting along that path. The media I am most interested in because it's easier than public speaking for...

When two or more people are talking at once with the TV on while the teenagers down the street are blasting their music and the kids next door are squealing as they play soccer.

I carefully avoid the sensory.
