Diane Ravitch has a two-part piece in the New York Review of Books comparing Finland with the TFA approach: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2012/mar/08/schools-we-can-envy/ http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2012/mar/22/how-and-how-not-improve-schools/?pagination=false The problem wit...

Teachers in the US already receive plenty of education. I would like to see EVERY state require teachers have a master's degree, but I also think that when master's degrees are required, there should be a longer time available for "provisional" teaching licenses of up to three years so that teacher...

A very good critique from a left-wing perspective, argues strongly against US-style education reform but also against some of the chestnuts on the left (i.e. the refusal to discuss the anti-intellectualism of the general culture as well as the lack of intellectual rigour in most ed schools): http://...

An interesting system. Unlike the so-called "education reformers" in the US, they take it seriously. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Finland I like the emphasis on equality and social mobility, the respect for teaching as a profession, and I think the split between upper and lower secondar...

Apparently there is a confusion here. I am myself not making these comments about "useless" degrees - but rather talking about anti-intellectualism on the political right that is for education only for a direct practical application. That kind of anti-intellectualism - that certain subjects, such a...

I think it was quite common for British left-liberal intellectuals to refer to Margaret Thatcher (disparagingly) as the grocer's daughter.

Being smart is fine if one becomes something "useful" like an engineer or physician. But as to becoming a philosopher, social scientist or theoretical physicist - as Ronald Reagan said: "Why should we subsidize intellectual curiosity?"

Ron Paul has taken some good positions on foreign policy and the drug war, but...
He's also a pro-life creationist who buys into the "legitimate rape" nonsense. And he claims to be a scientist too! |

Murray seems to conflate the "upper class" with the liberal intelligentsia. The "liberal elites" of Cambridge and Palo Alto, Hollywood and the Upper West Side of Manhattan certainly exist; however are hardly typical of wealthy Americans as a whole, most of whom are Republican and are far more likely...

To answer my own question here's one "difference" between Jill Stein and Rocky Anderson: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/fact-checking-the-third-party-debate/2012/10/25/bc1c4088-1ea7-11e2-9cd5-b55c38388962_comment.html?commentID=washingtonpost.com%2FECHO%2Fitem%2F1351400387-14-...

I'm Canadian so I don't have a vote...but in terms of who I'd back I'm torn between Jill Stein, Rocky Anderson and Stephen Durham of the Freedom Socialist Party.
Any thoughts on Jill vs. Rocky in particular? |
