Thanks for the replies. I am very nervous about him learning to drive - pretty sure that's typical with ALL kids though! I was thinking of getting him a driver's handbook for christmas which would give him eight months to learn the ins and outs of the rules of the road. Not ntirely sure I want to sp...

Thanks NE! I am worried that at this rate he'll be 20 and I'll still have to be walking him through getting dressed in the morning! lol
I hate feeling like I spend the whole day on his case for stuff and I know he hates it too but if I don't say anything he doesn't do anything! |

Hi all, My son is 15 and has Asperger's and ADHD. I have been trying to encourage him to be more independant in his daily routines but we're failing miserably. We've had the same routines for years when it comes to getting up, ready for school, chores, homework and bedtime. The only stuff he seems t...

Wow, this sounds very familiar to what we've been going through with my son for years now. I posted about it a few months ago and got a lot of interesting theories to check out, which we did to no avail. The doctors have said there is nothing physically wrong with him that would cause him to eat the...

My ex husband does this and he doesn't have AS. He does it far less now but for the first 5 years I knew him it was terrible, when we moved in together I would point it out to him when he was doing it and he would stop which seemed to help a lot. I rarely see him do it now. I'm a huge believer in be...

Thank you for the post, Vivienne.
He doesn't exhibit any of those signs but it's good to know what they are as I have a daughter as well who is very self conscious and I worry she'll be weight conscious as a teen. I didn't realize a lot of those were associated with bulimia. Thanks! |

I have often wondered about tastes with my son as well, he definately favours things with strong flavours and always has. He loves lemons and lives and hot spicy food or things that are extremely sweet. Once when he was almost 3 he tried to drink from a bottle of nail polish remover at a sitter's ho...

Thank you for your post, tracker. Yes, he is very active and outdoorsy, even in the winter months( we live out in the country ). I have often wondered HOW he isn't gaining a tonne of weight given what he consumes outside of regular meals and snacks. He is gaining weight but at a normal weight for hi...

Mgran - you're ok, not insensitive, I think I may be a bit hypersensitive around this topic lately because its been so prevalent. I appreciate your owrds of advice. :) Kiley - on the topic of chewing, he has gotten a lot better but I do still have to watch him at dinner time, especially with meats. ...

Me too, angelbear. I realize my second last post seems a bit defensive, I don't mean for it to be, I am simply frustrated as the doctors and everyone I have talked to for years have simply written it off as unimportant, boys will be boys, and now with being a teenager it must simply be because that'...

My little boy who is almost 5 tends to want to eat all the time. He is not really hoarding or sneaking food, but his appetite was a concern to me for awhile. But then I realized that he probably was going through a growth spurt because he is not really getting fat either. Thank goodness my son love...

Thank you for all the replies, definately lots of information to check out. Perhaps their suggestion of OCD was not quite right for my son's issues so I will certainly revisit it again with his doctors. I understand what everyone is saying about it potentially being an age thing as he is a teenager,...

Thank you for the reply, Chronos. My son has been seen by an endo and has his bloodwork including thyroid etc done 3 - 4 times a year. I have had them test for diabetes and things like that over the years to rule it out and everything has come back clean, the doctors say they can find no physical re...

Hi all, My son is almost 15 and has had an ongoing issue for quite some time that we haven't been able to get a handle on, hopefully someone can offer some suggestions. He sneaks food at night, this has been going on for about 11 - 12 years to varying degrees. He sneaks food he isn't supposed to hav...

Thank you angelbear. I also do believe that genetics and environment can play a role too. I am fairly certain my older brother has fairly severe asperger's although he was never diagnosed. Watching my son grow up and being an active part of his upbringing my mother now believes that my brother has a...

Hi, new here and I've been reading around the forums for a while and felt the need to post here as this has always been a topic that comes to mind when discussing my son's AS. I had my son when I was very young and as a young mum didn't know a while lot about pregnancy and what was normal. I was see...
