For me it was just different. In HS I was in a small school, my teachers knew me and I knew my classmates. I didn't have a strong group of friends and my parents found my anxiety hard to manage but in HS I did not feel alone. I spent a lot of time alone but I was happy with that. I couldn't wait to ...

I agree that a lot of things would have made more sense if I'd known earlier and I think dx is really important. However, I had enough resiliency to handle the challenges and I do think given my resiliency level I was better off not finding out until later. When I found out was about the time that m...

I agree that anyone arguing that adults are being overdiagnosed is insane. Adults were not dx as children because there was no understanding of AS when we were children. Often within communities people try to exclude others. Hopefully the ASD community doesn't go down this path. We all need accommod...

What did you talk about? We discussed a lot of different things about what I found challenging at home, in relationships, at jobs, etc. We also discussed my childhood, teens years, family, etc. How did you arrange meeting a psychiatrist if you did it yourself? I found potential individuals on GRASPs...

I have AS and I am very good at certain things that would suggest my coordination is great but I have some other serious coordination issues. Usually schools have too many students for the amount of time they have with specialists. To the best of my understanding, parents can refuse a service but th...

To me its complicated. With a public system there is the problem of cost. In Canada things are covered but it can require a great deal of time. I don't believe the system is intentionally trying to mess with people but: 1 - The timelines are long so sometimes it just requires forever and that is fru...

Hi
I'm writing a book about my experiences with AS too. I don't know that my story is original enough to get published but it is a worthwhile thing for me so I say go for it and see where it takes you.

I sought out a dx at 31. I have a full time job and positive job reviews. I had heard the whole "if your life is okay don't bother argument" but it didn't work for me. I haven't shared the info with work yet BUT now it is my choice if I choose to share the information or not. When I only had a self ...

I get where you are coming from. I didn't feel that so much when I got the diagnosis as when I realized I had AS. It was a relief but it was also depressing because things that I had always thought if I just worked a little harder on I could change I now realized were really part of who I was and we...

I totally get the frustration but I agree that the policy isn't to be unfair. Each establishment has its own bottom line issues. 5$ is pretty standard around here. Many small businesses don't accept credit or debit where I live because the cost of the machines is just too high. Personally I'm a cash...

I am in Education. My initial thoughts are: - can you give us a bit more detail so we can provide specific suggestions? - in most cases, my (blunt) opinion it is best to try to collaborate with the teacher before jumping to the district level or a lawyer - if your child is going to be at the school ...

I want to get a formal dx. In Canada, with the Charter of Rights, the issues listed are not issues. Our health care is covered, the law prohibits discrimination in hiring based on a disability and with a formal dx I could request accommodations at work that would still allow me to do my job well but...
