And I belive Neurotypical referrs to people who don't have an underlying neurological disorder/abnormality, I mean as it says neuro'typical' as in what is normal neurologically. No, it means someone who's not autistic. With that kind of definition, it's hard to draw the line around "what's normal" ...

Ok, I think Sweetleaf put a finger on why telling someone to be happy gives me the willies: it's like the scene that happens in a bad sci-fi horror movie right before the main character realizes EVERYONE around them is a pod person. "Why are you upset? Be happy... Be like us... Jooooin us... Haaappp...

"The cure for depression is to just cheer up, darn it!" Har har... I actually had a therapist tell me that. I came in depressed out of my mind, and that was their advice: cheer up. I didn't laugh. What scared me was, neither did they. They were serious. I don't really have people tell me to cheer up...

Moby Dick makes interesting reading for a couple of reasons, one of which is all the information on cetatians. If that's not your cup of tea, those chapters will bore you out of your skull. Another reason is that Melville started with a central character, but then decided he really wanted to focus o...

Still, for an HR rep to call you crazy is crossing a line into unprofessional behavior, in my opinion. It's funny, though, I have had a grand total of one employer out of... well, more than I care to admit to, where I felt safe going to HR. In one case I filed a complaint, only to find out the HR re...

If the automation results in increased productivity then, assuming the same demand for the product/service, less staff will be required and some jobs may be lost. Turns out that's a pretty big assumption. In most of the cases where I've been at a place that's automating parts of its business, what ...

I can't say I buy into this. The last two doctors I talked to didn't fit the technophobe model at all. One was a neurosurgeon, and described a seriously cool system he has on his operating microscope: He can take an MRI of a person's head with markers attached to it, and overlay the 3D model of the ...

Good set of questions! First off, have you looked for work outside your current country of residence? Development may not be a #1 priority there, but elsewhere development is a big business. Most of the places where there's hard core development, there's not as much experience in urban planning. You...

Funny thing is, this isn't all that new. I got a book a while back on factory life in the late 1800's. Two chapters dealt with chemical factories. One was for bleach, the other for sulfuric acid. Another book I've got that dates back to that same time period has sections on the use of sulfuric acid ...

Bring the situation to the attention of the school authorities. You've told your counselor. Insist that the counselor show you where they have logged this in your file. If they haven't, tell them you want to see a letter, signed by them, and dated, that states you brought the bullying to their atten...

I'd also be curious if there's something that works. Specifically, I'm not interested in taking a maintenance medication if I can avoid it, but when the obsessions get really nasty, it would be nice to have an out. The obsessions I'm talking about are not AS special interest obsessions. They're intr...

AngelRho brings up some good points, especially if this is at a school. Depending on what the school rules are, the cost of fighting back may be prohibitive. (I'm wincing as I type this.) In the case of one school I'm unfortunately quite familiar with, defending yourself by raising your hand against...

There's some truth to the statement that employers do look to the local pool of talent, but I've also seen that people do hire from out of town. The last job hunt I did involved applying at jobs in more than eight countries. (Hey, I was desperate!) In the end I moved overseas. Since then we've hired...

Get a job. Here's why: There are two big massive red flags an employer can see in a resume: One is an extended period of unemployment with no rational explanation in the cover letter. The other is an extended period of job hopping with jobs lasting only a few months. In the event the economy turns a...
