Wow the unemployment rate is that high? Interesting. Of course the Spectrum is quite wide. I would be more interested to see what the unemployment rate is among the "high-functioning" (however you want to interpret that). I could see many people with ASD unable to find jobs, despite having the poten...

Meh. Unfortunately, that's how our society has become. People think you're either supposed to do it all on your own without any help or you don't deserve to exist. We have become such an non-compassionate and cruel culture and aspies often receive the brunt of the consequences. I just want to say t...

Well I find that the feeling of isolation and being different from the rest of the world takes it toll on you. If you allow your resentment of the rest of the world to accumulate, you may end up lashing out on others. Don't think of this along the lines of "aspies could become murderers". Think abou...

I wouldn't get too worried about the terminology.
On the plus side, if the government brands the whole spectrum as "disabled" then maybe everyone who is diagnosed will receive some sort of financial compensation (for fairness or something). I would just take the money and laugh at their ignorance. |

I believe fitting in is necessary if you want to achieve the greatest possible amount of success. People like to bring up the example of Einstein, but what if Einstein was just slightly less intelligent? What if his theories were just a dead end? I think, in that case, he would have been screwed. I...

I find that I have a very automatic tendency to imitate the social mannerisms of certain people (or fictional characters) I have been exposed to most recently. This isn't intentional; it happens automatically, and often it isn't even that desirable. I recently was watching the amazing television sho...

I have to say, your writing style is quite impressive. How natural does that come to you? Do you spend much time editing your posts or is that basically your first draft? When I write I have a natural tendency to make things unnecessarily wordy, and it doesn't always turn out nicely. Sometimes I eve...

The way you write is quite verbose and formal. Do you write that way naturally? Or are you just doing that on purpose to make yourself seem more like an aspie (to us and yourself). Not trying to accuse you of anything of course. But it's worth thinking about where your writing style came from becaus...

One saying I've heard a lot is about "pushing the baby bird out of the nest" to force someone to be independent. You know what I see a lot on the ground in the spring? Dead baby birds. That's true. Nature is cruel and efficient. It's all a numbers game really. Most birds will just know how to fly i...

It seems like you were generalizing quite strongly in that last paragraph. The guy you were 'friends' with was obviously a piece of sh**, and his lack of morals is not common across all NT's. As you pointed out, you just didn't realize he's a jerk because you didn't 'stand your ground' in certain s...

I believe a lot more autistic people would be independent if a lot more autistic people HAD to be independent. I've learned a lot of stuff really quickly that for whatever reason I did not learn at that appropriate age once I was forced to actually do it. The thing about this type of 'sink or swim'...

I had a friend (until last night) that always treated me this way. It was very frustrating because I would try my best to explain to him what ASD means and suggested many times he just spend ten minutes reading Wikipedia to make communication and such easier between the two of us. Instead, he just ...

I find that most of the symptoms of Aspergers fit me, but I tend not to have long-term pervasive obsessions/hobbies. Most of my pursuits tend to be short lived but nonetheless very involved and intensive. Does anyone else have this tendency? I find it to be rather annoying. I would much prefer if I ...
