Forum: Parents' Discussion   Topic: Why would he even THINK that this is a good idea?

I feel your pain. I think one of the hardest things for an NT parent is not being able to predict which social rules our kids aren't going to get. Personally speaking, it would never occur to me that dd would think spitting on someone is okay because she's never been told it's not okay. As we've dea...

Dd 11 is also an aspie, with palilalia. Our neuropsych said it could be one of several things, the most likely being she started doing it to check and make sure she said what she meant to say(or process what she had said), and it's become a habit. It has lessened as she's gotten older, doesn't happe...

Hopefully your wife didn't sign the paperwork. He does still qualify for an IEP with the new diagnoses. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who has had to fight tooth and nail for my dd, so I admit to being biased. Under an IEP there are real, serious legal consequences if a school does not fol...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Sims games for wii, or nintendo ds. They are child friendly, and have really helped Daisy. In the games in addition to problem solving, there are lots of character interactions that are multiple choice. The choice the player makes is reflected in how the person...

That is horrifying, and I wish it were surprising. I'm glad you pursued it to the degree you did. Unfortunately, the one legal loopholes schools can use is to refuse to acknowledge that a disability exists at all...and it does often take litigation to get them to change that. In our case, I am cert...

On the flipside, her school basically refused her any services other than a very informal lunch buddies group, because of her grades. I was told for her to qualify for anything else, I would have to let her fail by no longer reminding her of assignments being due, reminding her to study, etc. For s...

Children actually get SSI, not SSDI, and the amount received is based on parent's income. Check on the social security website, but I suspect if your income is too high for medicaid, it's probably too high for SSI. Daisy receives SSI for another medical condition, our total income is less than 1000/...

I got a *huge* wake-up call when I had to pull Daisy out of the classroom due to other medical issues. She went from basically 35 hrs a week to 5 hrs with a homebound teacher, and maintained an "A" average with literally no trouble, and maybe 45 min of homework a week. What does that say about the o...

A couple of days ago daisy was relaxing in her room (we had done a bedroom makeover for her 11th b'day), and all of a sudden pops out with: "Mom, I just LOVE my ovulating fan!" ...it's still cracking me up..as soon as she realized what she had said (because I was about to fall off the bed I was laug...

I am a preschool teacher with several children with ASD. I am a new teacher so I am wondering when you hear your children saying these funny things, how do you respond? Most of the things I hear are cute and innocent. Sometimes they are disruptive or rude and a response should be something besides ...

I agree with a pp that a LOT is in the presentation. DD(10) always struggled with math in the regular classroom. She's done homebound school the last two years, and this year they decided she should try an online math program, and not only that, but a grade up. I was very hesitant, but agreed to a t...

The same thing happens at our house as well. When I spoke to her psych about it, he said it's pretty normal, and that because she feels "safe" at home, it's the natural place for her to vent. She knows she isn't going to be looked at differently by peers for being called out in front of them, she kn...

Dd(10) has always had great eye contact with people she knows well when things are going smoothly. If she's stressed or frustrated though, all bets are off. She's had the same teacher for homebound for the past two yrs, they have a great relationship, and I'm really not looking forward to breaking i...

Dd(10) has a problem with throwing away food left on her plate as well, I'm actually somewhat relieved to see she's not alone. In our situation, with her being young, I tell her I'll eat it, wait until she's otherwise distracted, and toss it. It doesn't even have to be a large quantity (she'll ask m...

I overheard this conversation last week between dd(10) and her 9yo NT best friend. I had to go outside afterward and laugh, after the whole rudeness/apology discussion. So they're sitting together on the couch watching a movie and best friend is also looking at a pre-teen magazine.. BF- Do you want ...
