Just a note. You don't need to post youtube videos. As of firefox 3.5.1 and later, it supports ogg vorbis and theora and you can upload your video to any site that will not convert it to closed standards. I post this so I can see the world change a few years sooner than a few years later. Anyway it will change, because openness is something that always existed and none can take it away from humanity, since it always belonged to us.

Not sure what message you tried to convey. Are you saying Windows isn't monitoring your hardware and let your CPU fired? Well, thermal throttling is supported by the CPU itself. If a CPU is fired after running for only 20hrs, Apple either messed up its firmware, or the notebook wasn't designed with enough cooling, or more likely both.

How about pressing the off button on your feelings and tuning on your logic and posting again?

Show me a presentation software for Linux that has a presenter view like MS PowerPoint/ Apple Keynote does. Or, a simple way to get dual screens working. Who could forgot the support for so many mainstream media formats? I know alot of people who use Apple Lossless, don't tell me that it's a small percentage.

And plus, linux uses obscure formats itself because normal formats cost money. The Linux Fondation does make money by donations so they could afford using the correct formats.

I stopped using Ubuntu 9.04 because of the inferior software and I had a lot of Wi-Fi problems.

Currently running Ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix.

Cannot get adobe flash player to work. Tried numerous methods, including the terminal, synaptic, the automatic installer. So no youtube. Or many other websites.

Tried to get my external DVD drive to play. Refuses. Got the codecs but comes up with an error anyway, one without any obvious solutions to.

Sometimes open office simply will not open.

Sometimes it simply will not download anything, continually claiming there is not enough disk space, to a usb stick which had 5gb free.

I cannot use this any more. I am forced to only because my netbook has internally failed and so I run Ubuntu off a usb stick. I can no longer continue with this so have headed to asus support page to get a replacement. And guess what, that website needs flash player :roll: :wall: :roll:

Sorry I have no idea what those do or how they work. I am not qualified to pontificate on them.

wav, mp3, mpeg, avi, fli/flv, mov, flac, ogg, wmv, wma, aac, alac, cda.. am I missing any? I think I am, but rest assured, they play as well. Most of them work out of the box, and if not...

Installing these codecs is simple, and I dont need some weird ass proprietary player. Does this look hard? I counted four mouse clicks to install ALL the restricted stuff. Not four clicks each, either.

What do you consider an obscure format? Ogg, aac? Flac? Its true that linux uses the obscure formats. But then, its true that linux uses all of the formats.

That formula might come in handy for some of you people.

Yes the operating system is more resource demanding. However is very compatible with any kind of hardware. 75% of the time your running off of generic hardware drivers in linux. Which by the way won't get full potential out of your computer. The only company that even makes drivers for Linux is Intel.

Secondly it has taken one of my friends hours to find a valuable flash player and pdf plug-in for linux.

Maybe Win9X was unstable but Windows XP is far from unstable. I've never seen the BSOD in any XP computers i have worked on in my life. Also if a program does make your computer slow as molasses you can close out of it.[You just mad that it takes 3-5 Minutes to close out of a unstable program.] You don't even have to reboot your computer to close out of a bad program.

Also for all you Beryl fans out there XP has a customizable GUI Too. What do you think the new XP UI was all about. To make it easy for you and developers to visual tweak your desktop the way you want it.

Oh and about the resource demands. XP will run fine on your old, rusty 300Mhz Celeron Box w/ 192MB PC100 Memory and 6.4GB HD. You just have to know how to take care of your computer. I don't want to here any complaints from morons clicking on any random e-mail attachment possible. Also if you use ccleaner and defrag once a week you won't have a problem even with a computer that old. Did i forget an actual antivirus program.

Flash works fine on Linux, and before you go XKCD on us, yes the option to use full screen flash has been there for some time in Linux.

All you have to do is install the flash plugin for your browser, which does require a little work, but when done, it's fine, even on x64.

That's a nice stereotype you got there. I'm newbie and I use gNewSense. I simply follow instructions that helpful people post to help me(and others). Am I the only non-technical[0] person using an Operating System with linux the kernel?

[0] = I've not been programming at a regular pace at any time, yet. I mostly prefer graphical user interfaces whenever possible. I like computers, but I understand them rarely.

Symbian OS.
Has players for nearly everything
Has office programs, bittorrent, you name it.

Doesn't get viruses or malware like windows
Doesn't have a snooty following like apple, nor does it cost too much.
Simple operating system without an elitist following like linux, with support for telnetting and such.

I can play snes games and stuff if I'm bothered.

My impression is that flac is by far the most used lossless compression format. I think even Monkey's Audio has a higher market share than Apple lossless. Seriously, why bother unless you're locked in to Apple.
