I stripped the shroud and fan off and the heat sink too.

Cleaned some dust and gunk out, removed the heat sink paste(It was quite dry), and applied more. Seems to be working great. As one of the most expensive components, I have been wary of doing this, but it alls seems to have gone well and temperatures are lower. I've done half a dozen processors, but cards are a little more involved. Mine had 11 screws to remove.

It took about 45 minutes to an hour, and wasnt so tricky. I have three more cards, and I might do them too. If you have been thinking about doing this, I'm open to questions. I am hardly an expert having only done it once, but maybe you can benefit from my limited experience.

Congrats! I have replaced some fans on graphics cards and I had to do some minor adapting since the replacements did not fit perfectly, but those fans only had four little itsy-bitsy screws.

Yeah, the high-end cards have gotten quite massive. I'm considering swapping to water cooling for it.

What about oil cooling, I have seen pictures of people who have used cooking oil to cool everything other than the hard disks and the power pack of a PC.

No way. I tear my computer apart too much.

I doubt oil will give better cooling than water at temperatures normally seen in computer.

That too. The best conductor is straight water. I'm looking at using distilled, but I have to find a biocide to put in it.

From what I've read, the better option is to use silver wire.

Yeah, and I actually used to have some, but now I cannot find it. Might have to order a bit.

All the graphics cards at the office either have had the fans fail on the video cards or are threatening to. Had to hunt down aftermarket fans/heatsinks for GPUs and install them.

Low to mid-range gaming cards make excellent office hardware for not much more than the cheap stuff.

I should probably clean out my card, it's been over a year. I haven't been very concerned at all since I upgraded my case. I figure if my CPU never goes above 50c then I'm fine, but I haven't even considered the GPU.

I have heard that too. Does it work? My main reservation is how much to put in and how to tell if there is enough dissolved.

It works. Silver iodide is used as a antiseptic for instance. You'd want to use fine silver as its 0.999 % purity means it corrodes slower. Sterling is only 0.925 and tarnishes quickly.

You dont need much. A piece several inches long will do, coiled so that it cant slip down the tubes and lodge in the pump. It takes several weeks for enough to dissolve into solution. After a year if its thinned down, add some more.

Hmm. Maybe I can get some silver iodide from a pharmacy.

i think plain silver would be better as silver iodide is toxic, used to work with it once when we made our own custom exposure plates.
i think ou can find it in some photoshops, if they still carry analog film and developing tools that is.
