I need help changing my IP.
I have my IP given to my by Cox through a router, so the steps on whatismyip don't work.

However, I have been able to change my IP doing a mac address clone.
Problem is, it changes my IP address but only slightly. My service provider and location is still the same.

I'd like it if I could change my IP and if still the same provider, at least have a different area (I am in Northern Virginia).
Is this possible and if so, how?
I have tried proxy's but many forums will not allow a proxy to login. It just boots you off.

Thanks.

The only IPs provided to you will be from the DHCP pool of your ISP.
These will still indicate your correct/local area.

You can power off your modem for a while and obtain a new address once your DHCP lease times out, however you will likely be in the same subnet.

That's right. There's no way around that, other than to change the internet provider.

Your external IP is assigned by the ISP. If you somehow managed to change it on your router to whatever IP you wanted then your Internet connection would stop working. Your IP must remain within the subnet assigned to your area by your ISP, and it must not be an IP assigned to someone else (duplicates aren't allowed).

Anyway, cloning the MAC address fools the ISP's DHCP server into believing that you got a new router or a new computer so you get a new IP, but always in the same subnet. You can accomplish the same by turning off the router for a while and then turning it back on. New IP, but again nearby in the same subnet.

Loooong story as to why that is the way it is. Routers and routing tables and BGP....

Why are you doing this anyway? If you are worried about being tracked online.... that's mostly done with cookies. Clear your browser cookies regularly.

I'm guessing the OP is asking this because he keeps getting banned from various other sites as per his other post (in the Random forum). Wouldn't it be better to simply change behaviour so as not to keep getting banned? Changing IP address doesn't help you much anyway, because moderators can typically see your old and new IP addresses and even if they aren't the same they may be sufficiently closely related to draw attention to you if you start breaking site rules. Using Proxies is like having a moderator magnet and draws attention straight away.

Is that what it is? Great.

I agree. Modify your behavior. This isn't a problem solvable with technology. This is a personal problem.

Many sites do not allow banned members to come back. So even if you change your behavior, which I have, they will ban you for circumventing. Hence I need a way to register with a different ip so I can join and not be a suspect of curcumcention.

If that is not possible, then how about one of you register me an account? That WOULD work. I hate being banned due to my past aspie tendency to post demo questions. That board is one of the few places I can interact with other people who have the same passion and interest. Lil help?

Change your service provider. That's the easiest way to get an entirely different IP.

Not really. It's dishonest for one thing and for another, you'd still be connecting with your current IP. This would be spotted and you'd get re-banned.

I suspect, bluecountry, that you are a millimetre away from being banned here.

Why on Earth would you think that openly requesting how to circumvent bans would endear you to the moderators?

Nope, just need a new acct for a week, once you are there for a week, they allow you to pass.
Only new members get vetted.
No help?

Use a proxyserver. There are free ones available on proxy dot org. You can also rent a proxyserver in pretty much any country. Anonymity networks like Tor can help mask your IP address as well, depending on your setup, and the tools the target site uses to identify its clients.

Do note, however, that switching IP does not automatically switch your identity. Moderators, known for their vicious hatred for troublemakers and people who row-row-fight-the-power too much, are occasionally equipped with the intelligence to see through even the most clever disguises and strike with banhammers within just a few posts of ban circumvention.

Have you ever used Tor? My friend showed me what it was and what it did, but I haven't had a use for it.

log in using www.hidemyass.com - or some other proxy server.

There is even web sites on the internet - where you can log in and get a bogus email address for a hour, a day or week for free that has a bogus IP address.

Or - you can call your internet service provider and have them assign you a new one.
They might charge you $30.00
Im not sure how Cox does it.
