Anti-tracking program

I found anti-tracking software that seems to be pretty good at blocking cookies. It's called Privacy Badger. After I started using it, I did a scan with Hitman Pro and didn't find any tracing cookies. It's sponsored by the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation).

I also installed a Firefox add-on, HTTPS everywhere. It encrypts major websites from HTTP to HTTPS to help with privacy.

...IF the site offers an https version. If not, it defaults to http. But, the software is big help to at least try secure sites.

Thanks for that. Ever since the Edward Snowden incident, I am more and more concerned about my privacy.

I typically use a combo of ABP (ad blocker plus) and Ghostery. They seem to complement each other nicely, can be switched on and off easily and when needed allow very fine grained tuning for sites that are particularly troublesome (ie to block everything except the specific scripting needed to allow a 3rd party comment system to function).

Both are nice b/c they have buttons on the toolbar so you can disable them with a minimum of inconvenience. Together I find that i sometimes have to turn one or the other off for certain sites, but if it's ABP it's possible to leave it on and simply customize it down to the specific objects being downloaded to the browser (or use wildcards).

A crucial benefit to me is that many sites are unload-able / unusable unless you block much of the advertising as it gobbles up all the available bandwidth. Sites that otherwise never finish loading complete in a second.

Just be sure to whitelist Wrong Planet as much as possible (and similar sites) so they get the income!

Be aware that Ghostery is operated by and feeds info to an advertising company...

I turned it off and use ABP + Disconnect. I know one guy who keeps a blacklist of known tracker sites in his hosts file, so they can't do anything; I haven't gotten that far yet.

I use the VPN(Virtual Private Network) Private Internet Access https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/p ... hgod_44GRA I also have FireFox set to not remember cookies & use AdBlocker.

How can you tell the ads apart from the trackers?
