Do you have the sensor tools activated?

http://www.quietearth.us/articles/2006/ ... -lmsensors

You'll be able to watch the temperatures. also, it looks like tonight some 2.6.24-19 kernels images are in the updates. 44 megs total for me.

Dear nerds,

I consider myself as being a computer-savvy guy who appreciates all the stuff he (me) can do with a computer, but I don't enjoy talking about computers all that much.

I love the things you can do with computers, but I don't like computers. Computers are dumb boxes. Some people consider me as being a computer-geek, but I seriously hate being associated with computers.

OK after reading all the posts on the subject MAN all i have to say is WOW. People these are just OSes and anyone is free to use the one of their choice. for example i use Linux Mint because its easy to use and i don"t have to have a virus scanner running 24 hours a day just to have my system in a usable state when i need to use it. In other words whatever OS one person chooses to use should be fine as long as it meets their needs and they shouldn't have to worry about being mocked because of their OS choice.Oh yea i almost forgot that i kind of wished that maturity would've not gone down as a result of people bashing Linux or any other OS for that matter.
Sincerely:

There's nothing wrong with Linux.

Different distributions offer different packages and offer different tools for installation and maintainance.

I would never go for Ubuntu myself. Debian works like a dream nowadays!

Unless you're running a server, Windows can do anything Linux can but better, especially DirectX, the best graphics API there is (designed specifically for games, therefore faster).

I have to disagree, OpenGL is just as good an API as Direct3D/X, is open-standard, cross-platform and non-proprietary. The only advantage DirectX has is that since MS maintains it, it can make use of the Windows architecture better, since M$ owns the Windows source-code, meaning it is better optimized to run on Windows. Also, the reason it is now such a widely-adopted API is that Microsoft stole large portions of OpenGL's design and specification to make it a more applealing platform for developers.

An OS can't directly overheat a CPU on its own. However, each OS has to have its own power-management features, as these are tied to what programs you have running so cannot be effectively controlled from the hardware level. OSX has awesome power management, Windows is alright, although I haven't run Ubuntu on my MacBook yet, so I couldn't say.
As part of his PHD in artificial intelligence, my friend ran a pretty complex AI program in Windows on his MacBook Pro for 20 hours, running both cores of his CPU at full whack. At the end of the 20 hours, he discovered his machine has switched itself off due to overheating, took the motherboard out and discovered the thermal paste on top of the CPU had been turned to dust (!). Now the machne can only run at 70% CPU capacity before cutting out, probably because the heat-sensor got fried.

If you don't enjoy talking about computers, then why the hell did you start this idiotic thread? Save us your immaturity and idiocy next time and shut the hell up. What did you hope to achieve by starting a thread in the 'computers, maths, science and tech' thread, ripping into Linux in the least informed manner, and then calling everyone who thught you were wrong and had the facts to prove so a 'zealot' and a 'nerd'.
Come on dude, that's the equivalent of walking into a gay-bar, shouting homophobic abuse to the clientelle and expecting them to agree with you.

Patrick,

Linux is a system for people who know about computers. Windows is a system for people who know jacksquat and so need to tell the computer how to tell them everything.

If you are having so much hatred for linux, its probably because you don't have the first clue about how to download programs that you like, write your own source code or develop your own programs

Totally agree, except these days, it's probably easier to install stuff on Linux :D Gotta love package management!

sudo apt-get install awesomeness. There is no analogue in OSX, and probably not in Windows either.

Orwell I'm going to include this too since you can install packages this way in Debian & Ubuntu
sudo aptitude install awesomeness
aptitude takes care of dependencies quite nicely but either way will work

as for the original poster

sudo research linux
enter password (my user password on linux)
Linux is a useful operating system that is many ways superior to Windows (This coming from a user who grew up learning DOS & uses OS X, Windows, XP & Vista as well as Ubuntu) It can be customized to run on many different hardware types including hardware that Windows wouldn't even consider running on. A LiveCD system (runs completely from CD doesn't touch Hard Drive) can show the user the wonders of this OS) and if help is desired the community is glad to step in provided that the request for help is asked respectfully & that all necessary details are provided. Many forums exist for linux help such Linuxquestions.org or for Debian related questions the Debian Wiki (wiki.debian.org) or the Debian forums (forums.debian.net) are useful & a google search will reveal many other forums for other distributions. Ubuntu has ubuntuforums.org/ as well as its own Wiki where you may find answers to your questions. In addition for various tasks on linux howtoforge.com provides user submitted tutorials for various linux distributions.
sudo -k (kill sudo session) clear && exit (clear terminal & exit terminal)
