I have a computer with lower specs than this one running Windows 7 Ultimate just fine.

I'd like to know your definition of "just fine".

With 2GB he should be able to run Windows 7 well enough. Edit: a previous poster made the same observation and said "just fine". How fine is just fine? Good enough. Cripes.

My old laptop had better specs than what was listed in the OP, including 4GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo, and it did not run Windows 7 "just fine" or "well enough."

@bigbadbest2007: Either of the machines you listed will crawl on Vista or Win7, and XP is quite outdated by now. Your best bet is Linux. I like Debian, but a lot of people enjoy Ubuntu.

Here are 10 alternates that are not windows, osx OR linux. (though one is bsd). Mostly they are all very light weight too.

Great way to describe Windows

They forgot minix :-)

Yes, they should have included it.

I was reading through your system specs in your post and I had noticed that your HDD capacity is rather inadequate when compared to today's standards. The standard installment of Microsoft's Windows Vista requires approximately 5 GB installed onto an internal or external HDD, and Windows Vista Professional can take up as much as 20 GB of your HDD space. As for potential hardware upgrades, You can purchase external HDD's for a cheap price depending on the source you aquired it from and the manufacturer, for example, and they derive from numerous forms, such as SATA, USB, IDE, and PATA. However, you have the option to install a substitute non-Windows OS depending on your preference for what you are willing to use your machine for. Linux and OSX generally do not take up much disk space, as Windows Vista and Windows 7 do. The amount of RAM is sufficient, but your processor seems to be lacking. So Windows 7 is out of the question here. Since you had stated in your context that you wish for your system to run 'snappily', I would suggest either OSX or Linux. Ubuntu is another option, too.

As in, it lets me use Office, check my e-mails, and browse the net at a perfectly reasonable speed. Obviously you can't expect to do anything crazy on old hardware, but for your basic computing needs, it's fine.

My WinVista install 'works', (well, being WinVista not really) on my system with 2GB RAM, but then again I went into it and turned all the crap such as the 'Aero Desktop' and a lot of startup items off. Then again I dual boot Linux with it, and use mostly Linux due to the fact that I absolutely HATE the Win 6.x series of MS products. You may have issues getting OSX to run due to the fact that the driver base is limited to what Apple uses. Stick with Linux, of which Ubuntu is a distro of.

That being said, you can score a copy of WinXP Pro for about $50-$75 US, Vista for more, and Win7 for about $200 US. Linux OTOH is free for the download. -- The choice seems quite clear when you factor in the cost of the OS.

Also, Other OS's mentioned via links may be free, (BSD variants, Haiku, etc) but the usage thereof is fairly minimal outside of Commercial server, Academic/ Scientific research, and Software hobbyist groups.

Did you just say it has a 90mm processor? I'm not familiar with old technology, but wow, I thought even the 90nm's produce a lot of heat. Nevermind, I guess its a typo. If it's 3GHz and 2GB of ram then it's not that old of a system. That could run windows 7 32 bit, but I would go with XP if I were you.

Yes. It is not any faster than Vista. In particular, Windows 7 will always run like absolute s**t unless you have discrete graphics.

Not true. Windows 7 just turns off the flashy animations and effects if you don't have a good graphics card. It won't harm performance.

That's true but it can still run pretty slow especially if the OP has 40GB of hard drive unless the OP decides to switch to classic mode then it should be no problem. ;)

The OP is better off with the starters/basic edition on 7 but personally XP since it's pretty lightweight in comparison to Vista and 7.

As I said before, I have a computer with lower specs than the OP (with more RAM, though, and I suggest the OP upgrades the RAM too) and it runs Windows 7 Ultimate fine, and that's with anti-virus and firewall in the background. It also has a 40GB hard drive, which makes no difference to the performance unless the computer runs out of RAM and needs to use virtual memory.
