BTW - what do you want to use this machine for? The OS can have a big play in that end goal...

From what I can tell, Crunch Bang seems to be even faster than Xubuntu.

It is, due to the fact that it has lighter rescources, but the trade off for this as I mentioned above is the fact that configuring a lot of the desktop stuff requires at least some rudimentary knowlege of scripting and the use of a text editor.

Depends on what you need. To me Web Browsing is simple. For word processing I suppose you could add Office Libre. I'm not sure I want to reconfigure my desktop beyond changing the Wallpaper lol.

Because I personally dislike the Default Waldorf theme and Conky config. Also, I switch keyboard layout so the CapsLock key is switched with the Control key. Also, I've created a several themes that lool almost exactly like TWM/VTWM themes, as well as tweaked a couple of the default OB themes. --In order to do this, you have to have at least some familiarity with Scripting/XML code.

Actually, 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM.. Windows 7 x86 would run rather well.

..now under that is a different story. I have it running on my 6-year-old's P4 Dell (P4@2GHz, 1GB of RAM) and it runs alright. All he does is play a few games and doodle.. maybe surf the 'net once in awhile. Nothing that requires >1GB of RAM.
