There a three things I don't like about Apple laptops:

1) glossy displays
2) glued-in batteries
3) no trackpoint

Besides these three points, they are nice machines with a good operating system.

I find the excess of monopolized content marketing systems in American computing, Microsoft, Google OR Apple to be nauseating with respect to my daily work needs and wishes to remain separate from Coca-Cola billboards & "Candy Crush (sadly among many other subdued works)". I use windows, sure, however most of my day is spent in Fedora 20 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), Canonical Linux, Android or Symbian and browsers too. At a determinist's breakpoint in coding, mass-market technology loses a lot of its' caché.

Thanks to the antitrust laws, there's less monopolization in the US than in the rest of the world. Microsoft can't refuse to give a paying software vendor a UEFI/secure boot signature just like that for instance (note: Fedora is signed by them), and neither Microsoft nor Apple are allowed to buy out their competition.

The very low risk for viruses and other nasties perhaps...

Other than that, I'm PC but prefer Apple phones and Tablets from Windows phone and Tablet counterparts.

Apple computers are like tech-candy. PC-s are clunky.

I own two older laptops and both of them are beautiful, smooth to the touch, quite silent (keyboard clicking, trackpad button clicking, disk spinning, fans cooling), and... used to smell very enticing. :-P

Appls is essentially a 'PC' since they abandoned RISC archetecture for Intel x86 CPU's @ 2K5. THe only thing that's differant is their Industrial Design, and the fact that it's REALLY difficult to upgrade hardware, at least on their notebook and iMac systems without pulling the entire thing apart. The only thing that really sets them apart these days is the fact that they run OSX/Unix.

That's the only thing that ever really mattered.

If it's the only thing that ever mattered, why did Mac OS have die-hard fanboys even before OS X? Installing Darwin or FreeBSD these days is no more difficult than installing Firefox.

MacOS is, and always has been, the differentiator for Apple. Even Jony Ive recognizes this. One of Jobs' most said quotes was "great software companies want to make their own hardware". It doesn't matter whether we're talking about OSX or any of the previous versions.

Darwin and FreeBSD are not OSX. FreeBSD doesn't even resemble OSX.

User-space programming for FreeBSD and OS X is very similar (a lot of user-space libraries are identical to the ones in FreeBSD), and while FreeBSD and OS X have developed independently since FreeBSD 5.x, most of the kernel is FreeBSD, with the lowest levels being replaced by Mach. As a matter of fact, a lot of the FreeBSD 9.x and FreeBSD 10 code is donated by Apple.

Darwin is pretty much OS X minus the proprietary parts (such as Aqua). A much bigger selling point of the old school Macs was the PowerPC. The OS itself had several drawbacks (the most infamous one was the lack of timer interrupts).

Back around 1998, the moved two groups including mine, to a new floor in an office building. The Macs were up and running within minutes of their arrival at the new locations. Two weeks later, IT was still struggling to get the Windows machines to print.

Now our IT people have all gradually switched their families over to Macs, because they are all also tech support for their families and it is still the case that the macs require only minimal maintenance while the PCs need constant attention.

Unless you are a hobbyist and want tending the system to be a major part of you do, a Mac is a good investment. You can always boot into windows or use a virtual machine if you need to.

You can still dual boot if you have Windows 7 or newer. The also release Silverlight and Office for Mac OS X.

I was doing tech support and had a lady ask if the company would pay for MicroSquish Office for her Mac. I thought she was joking, until I asked a co-worker. Mac has programs that do the same thing, why would anyone want that ???

I'd rather use OpenOffice (or LibreOffice) than both MS Office and whatever it is Apple is offering instead. Nevertheless, there's a market for MS Office on OS X as well.
