I was born and raised on the combination of windows 3.11 and DOS.

I liked DOS better anyday as I could alter that pesky EMM memory to play privateer!

I still have that computer, only without windows 3.11 and with dos only on it. I still use it to play privateer!

My preferred OS is Linux, for similar reasons to Peter - you have to tinker with it to make it work, lol. The whole open source, DIY ethic I love as well, I detest Microsoft's business practices. Code should be 'free' IMHO. I do have a soft spot for DOS and Win98SE but I am a definite convert now (though I disliked XP intensely so I didn't take much converting, lol). As regards MacOS I have never used it. It sounds nice in theory, but the bespoke hardware required and cost always put me off. Might have to try out FreeBSD one of these days, but for now I'm happy with Linux. :)

I dual boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP - no problems as of now on my laptop.

It's Linux nowadays.

Before it used to be AmigaOS, but AmigaOS just can't compete any more. I will always like the Amiga philosophy which is based that programs shall be small and efficient. I dislike heavy applications which sucks power like an elephant, it just doesn't feel attractive and slows down the hole system to an extreme. Linux is okay!

Have a look at this free book then. It is exactly what you are asking for. Local WP persona DentArthurDent is reading it (hes new to linux) and said hes learning a lot. It translates and compares concepts to windows to ease the transition.

I only use UNIX. My preferred variant is GNU/Linux, either Fedora or Ubuntu. Debian's fine too, but is a bit too slow-moving for my tastes.

Wait, Windows counts as an operating system?

Linux all the way (Ubuntu, Hardy Heron). I've only briefly tried a Mac, so I can't really say much about that. But I have too many bad experiences with Windows to say much good about it. Once you swap to Linux, you don't go back.

Not to my mind. Its only redeeming quality is the volume of third-party software developed for it, and this is a function of its market share rather than anything inherent to Windows itself.

You always have the option to use Debian unstable. I myself am using the backports option to be able to use newer software which can be used with Debian Lenny such as Open Office 3.0.1 for example. I wouldn't say that's very old software, to make an example.

Yeah, but still. I didn't see much of anything in Debian that I wasn't already getting in Ubuntu, and it's not worth learning the different quirks of Debian to get what would effectively be the same thing. Plus, driver support is handled better in Ubuntu. Everything is still possible in Debian, but why do I want to fight my computer so much?

If you're keen on how the source code goes together to make the OS work, Debian is closer to the source than Ubuntu. Mind you, Slack is probably even closer than that.

Otherwise, yeah. Ubuntu is better at working out what hardware you're throwing at it and making it work. Who needs the hassle.

Windows - well there's a corporation that has stolen from everyone it could, bought everyone it couldn't and is only now starting to respond to the lash of the law. They do own a large chunk of the world, though, and that merits a certain sort of respect.

Linux. Ubuntu (6.10, 8.04) was nice, but I moved to Fedora and found that hardware support was better (graphics card, wireless, sound) and worked out of the box. The only negative thing about it so far is that it took a while to get used to using yum instead of apt/aptitude for some reason. I technically dual boot with Windows Vista, but I rarely use it. I can't get wireless internet to work on Windows, and without that it's completely useless. (I was going to use it for iTunes. I STILL WANT ITUNES.)

I have used every Microsoft OS that has been released. I was born in 1990, but MS-Dos was the first operating system I used. Right now I noot between Vista and Ubuntu 9.04. I've used Ubuntu for a year and I am really impressed with it.
