Stuff like noscript plugins can enable/disable stuff you do not need. I stay away from sites i do not need to visit, if a website does not work with javascript disabled, i'm probably not going to enable it unless it is something really important. If so, i can always visit it in a VM.

Most cookies and other tracking code need to be run clientside, that usually means javascript so...

I tried to run http://www.pingtest.net/ but it said it needed to have Java enabled. I think firefox blacklisted Java.

How can you tell the ads apart from the trackers?

Trackers are a form of advertising revenue I assume, while they lag the site, they aren't as bad as videos, popups, or ads in floating frames. It shows in Ghostery which kind of tracker each tracker is, whether its for some function of the website or if its just advertising. You can turn on or off whichever tracker you want.

I turned it off and use ABP + Disconnect. I know one guy who keeps a blacklist of known tracker sites in his hosts file, so they can't do anything; I haven't gotten that far yet.

I mean faceless corp. abiding by opt-in clauses.....idk....how do you trust them now?
