Like someone already said, don't stop figuring out new things. Maybe the next one will be a new discovery extending humanity's understanding of the field!

I have something more modest, a hash table algorithm which conserves computer memory by using a collision resolution method which is neither internal chaining nor open addressing. I doubted I was the first to come up with it, so I have been looking for prior art for about five years now. The USPTO has over 20,000 hash table patents on record! They're not supposed to grant patents on algorithms, but it seems to happen a lot anyway.

What I'd like to do is make a defensive publication (in a journal or other source which the USPTO assessors use to search for prior art) so anyone can use the algorithm and nobody else can patent it and claim it as their own. (The United States patent law changed from first-to-invent to first-to-file in 2013, so now anyone can patent someone else's work if it isn't defended.)
