Seamonkey 2: Now, with 30% less fail

I just downloaded Seamonkey 2 Alpha 3, and I must say I am pleasantly surprised. It actually renders Facebook properly (the whole Seamonkey 1 series just couldn't handle such a demanding site) and in general seems much more up to date and feels like an actual modern browser. It even works with my most essential add-ons (session manager, adblock plus, and noscript) and successfully imported mail account settings from Thunderbird. Some UI elements are a bit weird, but a bit of tweaking clears up the worst of the aberrant behavior in Mozilla's unloved stepchild.

Meanwhile, the betas of Firefox 3.5 and Opera 10 are still pretty much kicking ass compared to anything else out there. Safari 4 is out but nothing to write home about, and Chrome and IE are tied to platforms I don't use.

What about the linux version of chrome? Dont you read lifehacker any more?

It still doesn't actually work. It looks funny, it's unstable, it doesn't run well at all, and above all it's not as awesome as Firefox.

By the way, how did my post get 1 reply and 0 views? (And yes, Lau, I do know about the site's strange view-counting mechanism. It just made me laugh)

can u tell me how to update seamonkey in puppy linux? and is version 2 compadible with windows ME?

Seamonkey doesn't actually have an update process- you have to reinstall, and before that you have to uninstall, and uninstalling is often a hassle with Seamonkey. I remember trying to get the latest stable version running on Ubuntu- it was a major pain in the rear to do so.

HERE is the download page for Seamonkey 2. They have a Windows .exe, but there's no guarantee that it will work on something so ancient as Windows ME. Also, be careful- it's still in Alpha right now. Most software projects don't consider something stable enough for actual use until, at earliest, the Beta stage, and even then recommend against using it. I've only had it crash once so far, but your mileage may vary.

Hardy har har. The Linux version of Chrome still sucks, and even the Windows version could never deliver what I need/want in a browser.

A bit more play, and Seamonkey 2 seems more and more to be a contender for my favorite browser. It certainly is less of a memory hog, and it has most all the features I want.

Scratch that, Seamonkey left on for a bit with normal use topped 730MB of memory usage, and it only has a handful of add-ons. It's also frying my processor and killing my battery life- Seamonkey alone eats several times more CPU than the entire rest of my system, including Firefox, and this brings my expected battery life on a full charge to about 90 minutes. The system normally gets about 4-4.5 hours of normal use on a full charge.

Back to Firefox. Why would I ever stray?
