For non linux users, one of linux' prime benefits is that our software is accumulated into central libraries. We dont have to go off to some strange web site with a .ru extension and hope we are not installing malware. You can look through these lists to perhaps find some interesting new software. Those one click "install it now" links wont work for you however. You'll have to look for an exe or dmg elsewhere.

GetDeb pushes Ubuntu closer to being like a rolling release distro. The software that they support is all latest release. It used to be that you had to visit the getdeb or developer web sites for latest release applications, but now you can add their repositories to your install of debian based distros.

And if you like games, there is playdeb as well now. Likewise, you can add its repository or just use the install now buttons. Its grown by quite a bit. When I found it six months ago, it had only 4 pages, and now its up to ten. Phenomenal growth, and if you cant find a game to suit you now, You soon will.

Or make it yourself and submit it to playdeb.

yeah, I'm still using yesterday's version. Only program I installed was Wings 3d (a free modeler), which would lock up if I try to exit (saves the work, just won't exit). I have to go into the equivalent of Task Manager and kill it there (hey, the kill command!...now if that isn't a reason to love Linux...;)

Hit alt-f2 and type xkill. then enter, and click the recalcitrant application.
