Everything I am trying to install is saying it cant because of APPDATA is not there. So umm what is it?

Assuming you are talking about Windows Vista? Then Appdata is a folder that holds program settings and program data. By default users don't have direct access to the folder but software does. However, none of this is likely to help because frankly if the folder is missing then I think your Windows installation is likely seriously corrupted. Hopefully someone else will have something of a more helpful nature for you. It would help if you could actually confirm you are talking about Windows Vista and what you are actually trying to install.

APPDATA is an environmental variable that points to the directory that programs should use to
store their data.

Before Vista, the default is C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data
The default of Vista is C:\User\<user name>\AppData\Roaming


It's hard to tell what's wrong with the info you provided.

I've seen a similar problem before with a program written by non-English writers. I think it can also happens to some programs if your Windows is non-English. Basically, in the cases I've seen, it boils down to programs using non-English character in the path name but not using unicode.

It is not on mine or anyone else's user folders (I love knowing my dad's password :p ) so is that y I cant install any MMOs?

Have you had any luck installing anything before, or is your dad not wanting you installing stuff on his computer

You must provide more information if you want people to help you. You haven't even told us what operating system you are using. What you are trying to install. Exactly what the error message is. It is no good just repeating that you can't install anything any more - none of us are psychic - we can't read your mind!

I am using vista, it is saying Error 1016: Could not access network location %APPDATA%\.

now for the bad news, are your able to make edits to your windows registry, if not, then your going to have to back up your
files then reinstall windows. I don't recommend you trying to edit you registry, unless you know your way around the registry

I did try to edit the registry and I still get the error message.

As a last option I would try running a registry repair tool, since your registry is corrupted it couldn't hurt

Is that error 1016 or 1606?

If it's 1016, then that's an registry error.

An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry.

If it's "Error 1606: Could Not Access Network Location", then double check the KB886549 Friskeygirl mentioned, especially the AppData key.

Is there any UAC prompt when you install that thing? Whatever, you can try manually elevate the installer by right clicking it and select Run as administrator. But you need admin privilege for that. If your account is just standard user, then you will find it hard to install most games (because the copy protection are usually implemented at the kernel level).

Also, is that MMO old? (seriously why such secrecy?) If it's not that new, then may be putting it under compatibility mode will help.

I did double check the KB886549 (right now running the registry scanner like she said to try), the game I think has been around for a couple of years it is called dungeons and dragons online, oh and WOW is the other game I am trying to re-re-install.
