audio digital to analog conversion question

Ok, I know there's at least 14,509 of you smarter than I am out there, so somebody please chime in and help me.

I just bought a full-HD LCD TV. The picture's great, but the sound is not so great. I figured I'd run out to Best Buy or some such place and buy a reasonably inexpensive shelf system and take the TV audio out into that, and voila! I'd be all good to go. Hardy har har.

First obstacle was that the shelf system didn't have a dual RCA in. None of them in the general price range did. Ok, fine; there are RCA - to - mini plug adapter cables conveniently located on a peg right above the systems. I get the hint. I went to the cash register undaunted but slightly wary, and with my new boxed audio system and an overpriced little cable.

The real problems started when I got home. I went to plug my new overpriced cable into my fancy-schmantzy TV, and... what's this?!?!?!???? No analog audio output? It never occurred to me to look for that before I went to Best Buy; after all, *everything* has RCA audio out, right?

Ha. My TV has S/PDIF output. Looks for all the world like RCA, but apparently is some sort of 75 Ohm co-ax contrivance. A little digging online reveals that there are such things as digital-to-analog audio coverter boxes. For $60 or more. And then i need an S/PDIF cable. This is not funny.

This is about to get more expensive than I like. Any way around this? Any of you cooking up these converters in your basements and willing to sell me one? Helllllppppp!

Dang the only thing I have made was a
spdif to spdif converter that is, it gggoes
to the cd audio on computer sound card
to the RCA from the cable tuner, dang that
is useless to you sorry dang poop fartypants I am.

Mebbe some smart apple on google has
a curcit that I can hook up I cood bild one
if someone wood desine one and I wood
try to sell it cheap to you depend on how
mcuich parts costed and I need a dremel drill
too dang busta poop bowl.

Thats the only thing I don't got is a dremel
drill to drill the holes in the circuit bord.
