Bing Images, Bing Video, Bind Maps, Bing Shopping. Hmmm... Where have I seen that before? Microsoft couldn't be copying Google, now, could it? Well, I guess this is to be expected from a company whose only original contribution to information technology was in the field of aggressive marketing. And why do they need Bing if they already have a search engine on MSN? I guess MSN wasn't enough like Google to gain a decent following. Yeah, okay.

Yes, Google's search engine may not have been 100% original, but Microsoft copies from other companies routinely. Sun made Java. They made C#. Apple made OS X. They made Windows 7. Netscape made Navigator. They made their own version of the browser. Apple made the iPod. They made the iPod Zune. The list goes on and on. Also, most of their "original" products, like Internet Explorer, were actually acquired.

80's relatively smaller (compared to Microsoft) software companies had gone bankrupt, or they got even smaller just because of Microsoft. Their purpose is to be the only company on their field (and each day they start new projects on new fields). Some of their trials can't be succesful such as "Zune" or "Live Search", but at least they try. Now their purpose is to make people more familiar with their new search engine "Bing". Most (or maybe all) internet users first use Bing by chance (not really expecting to get into Bing site and search something). They use Bing, because, Internet Explorer defaultly sets Bing as default search engine, installing Windows Live Messenger makes Bing as the homepage of Internet Explorer (this makes users to access bing easier). After setting, people start to forget about Google or Yahoo, and use Bing regularly.

This is their new route on their search engine. Make people forget about other choices, and use their product.

Your problem is? They both made programming languages... that's copying? Is that not like saying that whoever made Java copied C?

What the hell? Of course they were going to make Windows 7, they were hardly going to stop at Vista. That seems more like a "Captain Obvious" statement more than anything else. It's called being a BUSINESS.

No comment, I have not used Navigator or an Ipod/Ipod Zune.

Internet Explorer is crap anyway, and even if it was "acquired" they have certainly updated it quite a lot.

I'm not a big Microsoft fan, but they have made computers much more accessible to the general public and they aren't as evil as people say they are. Everyone hates them for some reason. If Microsoft are basing Bing on Google then that's a good thing, Google worked and someone is trying to improve the formula, things don't get better if people don't take the original idea and build on it.

If people just kept using the original product then everyone would be coding in Assembler and using computers with 32kb of RAM.

I got something to say to all of you Microsoft-haters:

Ubuntu is a fad. It is exactly what Linux was never meant to be... A consumer desktop OS for the masses.

You think Microsoft offering a few different versions of Windows is bad? How about choosing from a few hundred distros of Linux which all try to be the consumer desktop OS's, which are all similar?

Ubuntu is free because no one would use it if they charged a hundred dollars for it.

Windows makes computing for dummies fun.

Not everyone can program.

And seriously... Bing gives you cashback, Google does not.

Microsoft made computers more accessible? Back when the PC was invented, there were hundreds of software companies writing operating systems to make them more accessible. Microsoft put all those companies out of business.

How ill informed you are. And off topic. Nobody mentioned linux until you did.

It wouldnt matter if it was. The goal of ubuntu is to make linux accessible to everyday users. It aims to provide modern computing world wide, for example, so that third world people dont have to steal software - such as windows and office - to get ahead.

Anyway, who ever said what linux(as a whole) was meant to be, other than a free alternative to unix? Not windows, young one, unix.

The beauty of linux is that it is free to become whatever it becomes.

Who said we think that? The closest would be the statement that new versions of windows retain the old problems while forcing people to buy new hardware and secondary software, only to find out that some of the promised fixes have been put off until the NEXT windows.

As for there being a million distributions of linux, thats because its not one company. By your logic Apple shouldnt release anything because windows already did? And why do you think surfeit of choice is a bad thing?

Again, terribly uniformed. Ubuntu is required to be free by its licence, GPL, which it derives from Debian, its parent. It is well supported by sales of merchandise like T-shirts, just like your favourite web comic. It also has, as do many of the distributions, a paid support program.

I'm not sure what that has to do with using a desktop environment. Maybe you dont understand what programming is? My mom sure doesnt, and she uses linux every day, just fine.

What does google or bing have to do with linux supposedly sucking? Maybe.... nothing?

Have fun using internet explorer, and photoshop Celtic_Frost.

I mentioned Linux because it is the weapon of choice for Microsoft-haters. Ubuntu feels so damned limited in what you can do and the simplest things will screw up the system.

I use Firefox and GIMP, not IE or Photoshop.

This topic is a Microsoft-hater topic. You know why? Because everyone is making Microsoft out to be the only company that rips off Google, which is wrong wrong wrong.

Bing is not original for sure, it's just another search engine with some gimmicks. But there's no reason to keep on hating on Microsoft because they are supposedly copying Google.

I might make a topic on how Google is trying to copy Yahoo, or how Ask.com is copying AOL.

And that eye cross joke was not clever nor funny. I was personally offended by the use of the cross in that implication.

People lose their jobs when companies go out of business. It also hurts consumers because they have fewer products to choose from, and it allows the companies that stay in business to charge more for less. Healthy competition is vital to the economy. When a single company deliberately eliminates any and all of its competitors, that's called a monopoly, and not only does it hurt everyone else; it's also illegal.

Other companies didn't have what it took to be winnners? Bull$hit! All the companies that Microsoft destroyed made good products, products that made life better and easier for consumers. But Microsoft had aggressive marketing strategies, coupled with an apathy toward the well-being of others, which was how they won in the end. You might as well look at a murder victim and say "Well, that person didn't have what it took to survive. The murderer should be let off the hook." I know killing smaller businesses is not the same thing as murder, but it is just as bad, because it affects thousands of lives.

As for your other comment about C# only being another programming language, that was just a display of ignorance. C# is based on Java. Everyone knows that. And Windows 7 is based on OS X. The guy who designed it even admitted it. Come back here when you can say things in a more educated way.

Of course healthy competition is a good thing. Yes, it does hurt consumers. But most companies would like nothing more than to eliminate competitors. People don't go into business to share profits. Microsoft are hardly a monopoly, that's why you can buy OS's from Apple, or use Linux. Although Linux was not developed in a business environment. I don't think deliberately getting rid of other companies is a good thing, but Microsoft aren't the only ones who do it.

As for C# being based off of Java. It obviously wasn't any sort of secret. What is WRONG with it being based off of Java? If, as you say, "everyone knows" that it was based off of Java, I don't see a problem. They didn't try to pass it off as their own language. That STILL makes it another programming language. Even if it was based off of Java that's making a good formula better, hardly a bad thing. It gives people more options. So what's the problem?

And as for Windows 7 being based off of OX S, source? You would think, that it would be based off of Windows Vista, simply using features from OS X.

I can certainly say things in an educated way, but what we are throwing around is mostly opinion and speculation, at least without sources.

You seem to be obsessing about linux.

You might as well take those apps off your system cause they are useless linux supporting applications. The Mozilla public licence and gimps GNU licence both promote the linux ideals. Mozilla was the open source project chosen deliberately to push the free software concept into the public consciousness. Since you've heard the term 'open source', you know it worked. And GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Gnu is a legal agreement which acts as a cancer to closed source paid software... such as what Microsoft develops. Its at the very basis of the linux creed. Guess what? You are supporting linux by using those applications. You are infesting windows with the linux spirit, devaluing paid commercial applications.

This is the only thing that you have said that is true. But in no way does it suggest that MS innovates. They even insinuated that in leaked internal documents... and then admitted the documents were legit.

Of course not. We can find much better reasons to despise them. Anyway, your scorn for linux justifies equal animosity from me towards Windows. You dont think you get special rights, do you?

Tough. computerlove expresses his persona however he likes. If he likes big crucifixes and Apple products, I'll tease my friend about it - and have a history of doing so - until he protests. More likely he'll just mock me back. Any slight to you is purely your imagination. computerlove and I have been mocking each other longer than you've been around wrong planet.

Until you suggested it, I had no idea what your beliefs were, they were not germane to the topic, had nothing to do with me joking with my friend, and I dont really care about religion outside the PPR subforum. Its off topic here.

Whatever you say... Open Source seems like a gimmick to me. I don't think people can make good software unless they get paid to do it. Firefox has become bloated and slow, much like Internet Explorer.

Give Ubuntu some time and it will be about as bloated and slow as Windows is, if it is not already.

Your animosity towards Windows is unjustified, and so is your love for Linux.
