After installing Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer I was distressed to learn that Linux does not support dial-up connections to the internet and my ISP does not support Linux.

After I ran into a stall trying to establish a connection I went to Ubuntu forums for help. I got one response telling me that dial-up connections were out of date, one suggesting that I do things that I had stated in my opening post that I had done, and several that just said good luck.

I am wondering if anyone had any positive experiences there.

It somewhat boggles my mind that anywhere in New Jersey is limited to dial up.

As far as your isp goes, your choice of operating system should be nearly invisible to them; why would they care what you use?

modems are a pain under linux because there are so many variants of dumb software modems that are entirely proprietary in how they are interfaced. you could get a real modem, anything thats serial for example.

I got this to work. There is a link in the help file (under Ubuntu), which takes you off to a link to download a pppd tool for Ubuntu. I do not have Ubuntu installed anymore, but I do remember that the site was European, and possibly Italian. The download was tiny. The instructions sucked, but they did work.

I go on Ubuntu Forums sometimes and I also have an account. I believe the problem is that a lot of modems are software based. You can give me the name and model number of your modem and I'll see what I can do. If not would suggest getting a real modem like a Lucent or a Lintel one. Down there is a list of modems supported by Carnoical.

I got the modem working from advice given to me form lnmodems.org Gamefreak, that is not the problem. The current problem is that my ISP rejects the username and password I am sending them even though they are correct. They tell me that their software is not compatable with Linux, and in my last message to them I ask them why should that matter since I was not using their software when I tried to connect.

I am still wating for a responce.

If my memory serves me correctly, there are two main ppp authentication protocols. One is Chap and the other is pap. Do you know which one your ISP uses? I've played with Ubuntu a bit but have not used it to any real extent so I am not a real expert on that particular distribution.
