According to the Jargon File (source), one of the things hackers detest and avoid is character-based menu interfaces. My question is, why? I'm somewhat of a hacker, and I love character-based menu interfaces. I love them because I find them aesthetically pleasing. What do you think of this? I am confused as to what all the hate is about.

I am at a serious loss for this one!! I have no idea why they would dislike them.
TBH I would prefer numbers and if you are resorting to letters there are to many options on screen!! !

I like them. 
They remind me of the setup programs DOS games used for configuring sound cards, playing around with BIOS settings to get juicy overclocks, and tweaking Linux kernels for optimum performance.
