I just repartitioned my hard drive, wiping Windows 7 completely into oblivion. Now I have a primary partition formatted as Ext3 and an extended partition that includes three logical partitions, two of them Ext3 and one reserved for swapping. I have only one OS on my hard drive, and that's a minimal, text-only version of Debian (I couldn't install the rest because it was a network install and my PC wasn't connected to the ethernet. I'll have to connect it and do it again.)

Windows 7 was, for all my purposes, basically useless. Anything I can do there I can do in Mac OS X, and that includes playing games. I rarely booted into Windows. Still, I kind of miss it. It had this sort of neo feel, with the way the Windows menu button glows when you put the cursor over it, the transparent window title bars. All the complexity of the NTFS filesystem, the command line fully integrated with the .NET framework, the tens of thousands of lines of code that went into creating it, all gone now.

R.I.P. Windows 7 on my PC.

Windows 7 loads way slower than that.

Mine loads that fast, and I'm using BitLocker on a 2 year old ThinkPad. What are you running that's so slow?

I think I still have Windows 7 because this box comes up from time to time, offering to explain Windows 8 to me. I click on "Later."

Last year I bought a new computer that came with Vista. It crashed (maybe because of Google Chrome) so I bought a refurbished one with XP. Thank heaven! What a relief!

It's probably offering IE8 to you. Windows 8 doesn't exist yet.

I don't think the software on it would affect how fast it loads. I'm not sure if I'm correct on this, but I think Windows XP loads the entire system, including the basic applications. Windows 7 doesn't do this, which is why it loads so much faster. But for me it took probably about 15 seconds to get to the desktop, about the same speed as my Mac. This may have something to do with my hardware, maybe it doesn't work as fast on the AMD64 architecture as it does on Intel x86.

Last happy day on earth I suspect. If it doesnt specifically say internet explorer 8 (or ie8 ) then its likely malware. Malicious people pull the same type of trick with directx12 which isnt released yet.

If you want eyecandy while still having a good OS, try KDE.

Right now I'm using GNOME when I'm on Knoppix because KDE is virtually unresponsive when I use it in a live CD. Once I get Debian installed, I think I'll switch to KDE.

Have you tried Arch Linux? It's the god of all OSes IMO.

What do you mean? The repos have nearly everything, and if those fail, you have the AUR which people upload their own packages to. So 99% of software is covered, even Dwarf Fortress!
