I use Windows, but I'd like to work with other operating systems just to learn them.

I could get a MAC if they went down in price and Apple stopped '1984' everything that users want to do, i.e. they do NOT want you to run X on regular Intel/AMD hardware and NOT to Jailbreak your iPhone.

Its like APPLE have become what they once were portraying the opposition as (Se youtube clip below) - a bunch of gray consumerhating nazis that wants to rule the world.

On the PC platform i can do whatever the hell i want without Steve Ballmer or Linus Torvalds pointing a finger, trying to prevent me from doing stuff.

Nah, I like Apple really, their stuff is innovative and tends to actually work better when you do what Apple wants and not hack the damn thing and install jailbreak apps.

I have a serious distaste for anything made by Apple. I use Windows 7 on my laptops, but I also multiboot with Ubuntu.

GNU/Linux all the way. Some BSD occasionally, intending more once Debian GNU/kFreeBSD goes stable.

Not as innovative as they like to claim... they're better at marketing than they are at anything else. And if Apple didn't place completely arbitrary and pointless restrictions on their users, there would be no need to "hack the damn thing." But, they do, and there is.

The fact is, Apple does and the industry follows. Clearly they're doing something right. I mean, show me one smartphone that was as advanced as the iPhone before Apple did it in 2007. From what I recall, before then, they were all crappy Windows Mobile devices with styluses and horrible UIs. Then the iPhone came, and the industry has only just caught up - it was literally years ahead.

And you don't need to hack it at all, you're acting like there's no choice. You can easily just use it as Apple intended. I'm not against jailbreaking or anything, don't get me wrong, but don't act as if it's the only way to use iDevices.

I find that the average user messes stuff up pretty quickly when they jailbreak, anyway, because they don't understand the power root access gives them. I miss the early days when jailbreaking was a complex process which only people with a decent computer knowledge could do, like it was when I got my first gen iPod touch - this was back when it was really limited and didn't even have the Notes app, I jailbroke it with a command line tool and put them on again and manually set the permissions. But, I digress.

It'd be nice if Apple gave the iPhone an unlockable bootloader like Google did with the Nexus One, of course, but it's their phone and they have no obligation to. If having full access to the system is essential to you, then you're clearly not the target market for the device. Either put up with playing the jailbreak cat-and-mouse game or get another phone (as I assume you've done).

One more thing, though... Apple isn't the only company to restrict mobile devices. HTC and Motorola, along with many other manufacturers, do it with their Android phones, and that really is stupid considering the point of Android is that it's an open OS
