I was not shore where to put this, so sens i am learning computer programing i thought i would put it here.
Any way, my problem is i can't focus on something for more than 5 minutes before getting distracted (even if its just an idle thought that seams interesting at the time), i have tried taking a 5 or 10 minute brake but that only makes it worse.
Any thoughts on how i could get better a focusing would be much appreciated.

P.S. this is not just a problem with learning computer programming, i have the same problem with almost every thing.

I'm like that, too. When I attended school, when I read or watch TV... Some minutes into the show/book/class etc, I'll space out. It can be any random thought or getting lost thinking about something that was just said in class/TV etc while class/the show etc would move on, I'd be stuck on that thought and sometimes that thought would lead me even more astray.

Unless I'm in hyperfocus, I'm like that constantly. And now I'm talking about classes/books/shows I enjoy! If I'm bored in addition, then bye bye concentration altogether. Sometimes it seems the only thing I can truly focus on, is obsessions.

I've been like that all my life.

No idea how to fix it. If you find a solution, please share it!

Keeping blank paper handy helps - when I get interested in something I scrawl down a list of what I'm trying to do. The part dome sheets hover around my desk in a sort of cloud and when I'm bored reading through them reawakens enough of the interests to get things done.

this dose not help me focus but it dose seam to get things done.
I divide the book (in this case its a book on programming) into 10 page increments and read 10 pages a day, i just turn of the tv/radio and read and don't turn it back on until i have read the 10 pages (10 pages may not seam like much but they are big pages with small print). it seams to be working, i have tried reading for 30 minutes or an hour or more and i just end up daydreaming the hole time.

Try willing yourself to focus on what you want to focus on. Concentration operates like a muscle... you can build it.

Aye, probably ill used.

You want to make sure your environment is noise and distraction free too. Don't try to work and listen to music, watch TV, or have your internet browser open, or nothing.

Pay attention to your attention. :D Any time you notice that you're not concentrating on what you want to be concentrating on, bring your attention straight back to where you want it to be.

You can do both in sequence, almost simultaneously. Giving a little attention to where your attention is or is not takes very little time and energy, and can get you right back to what you are supposed to have your attention on in the first place.

 If that guy can keep his focus on headbutting that wall long enough, eventually he'll bust through it.

What are you trying to communicate with your symbolic gesture there?

Ha! Yeah, maybe you should walk before you run... I think what Kaybee was getting at is that often we don't even know when we are distracted... it's useful to be able to keep track of that.

But for now I'd advise you just to make some effort to simply will your attention back to what you want to focus on. Give it a try anyway. Happy hunting.
