say a person consults for the CIA and gets direct deposit. How would that show on the bank statement?

I've never worked for the CIA, so I can't say for certain.

But I'm assuming it would work one of two ways. If you were an open civilian consultant - say, they hired you to give them advice on what colour to paint their hallways to keep agents from getting depressed over the risks of getting caught - then it would just say, Central Intelligence Agency or US Treasury, or whatever would be the norm for any government agency. In other words, there would be no reason for them to keep that secret. But, if you were a secret consultant, say that you were giving them information on a company they suspected of being a front, then I think it would show the name of some front corporation. I do know that the CIA has set up and used - and, presumably, continues to use - such front corporations. So in that case it would read XYZ Corp, or Ghost Airways, or whatever. (No, I don't think they'd be so obvious as to use "Ghost Airways" - that was my warped sense of humour taking over.)

Just in case you are, I'll pass on a suggestion which might or might not help. If a major plot point hinges on whether or not the CIA gives away their relationship with someone on their bank statement, it won't help at all. But if it is a relatively minor issue, you'd simply type in "TK" or "CIA? TK" - TK is a code meaning "to come". It is a rare enough letter combination it is easy enough to search for later. So, you can keep writing, then go back later and fill in the details you didn't know. If you forget, this is a standard code in journalism / editing, so an agent or editor would understand that you'd just skipped a fact in this way.
