How many firefoxes

...full of tabs that I've not finished reading can I keep open at once? It's getting a bit out of hand.

Careful. A new form of hacking is hacking into tabs. Gotta activate them once in a while.
I know what you mean though. Can go off into any number of tangents with tabs. It's great for research.

I think I was really trying to ask a technical question about the extent of tabbery I was likely to be able to get up to without causing my system to fall over, but if it can cause security problems, I'll attempt to curb my enthusiasm for billions of open tabs.

The number of open tabs, in principle, is limited only by how much memory your system has. If you're using a poorly-coded browser, it may fall over on itself before you reach that threshold. I don't know what james was referring to, but as far as I know there is no security risk from having multiple open tabs, aside from those that result from being on the internet to begin with.

For me, with FF and 6GB of RAM, my system will start bogging down at about 150 tabs. I think FF leaks memory (slowly uses more & more, even if you're not doing anything), also, though. Sometimes I'll kill it off and re-start (using session manager to get the tabs back) which seems to help a litlle.

I've got the same problem. :lol:
It only give me problems on my old computer with only 1gb of RAM, not anymore with 4gb, three of them being free of Window 7 insane weight.
Just keep a cpu meter on your desktop to know the amount of free RAM you can still use. Also, restarting your computer can free some RAM, I guess there is a accumulation of junk data staying after closing a game/video/application or something.

Why keep the tabs open at all? You can either make judicious use of your search history (there is a Firefox add-in that exposes this easily and allows for searching), or have a look at SurfMark. Google it.

I use SurfMarks for Linux, which is only the FF add-in, but if you happen to be running Windows, there is both a FF add-in and an application.

Using SurfMark, not only can you record your search history, but you can share it as well. This is ideal for working on group assignments and sharing your research with your team members.
