Need an os for my pc!? I just got it stroke of luck
Can anybody recommend an os (including Windows) Windows 98 maybe?
for my pc specs are:

HP 7700
P4 531 Prescott HT 3.0ghz 1mb cache 90 mm
Socket LGA 775 (64-bit)
2gb DDR 2 ram PCIe
40gb hdd
ASUS DVD-RW
Intel (R) 82945G Express Chip set 256 mb. Vram

any upgrade Hardware suggestions?
for an OS to run snappily!?

Your hard drive capacity is too low for today's usage. Get a larger hard drive to back it up.

And why would you want Windows 98? Windows XP would be a good bet. Try and see if anyone is willing to hand you a legitimate XP product key that's not being used or something.

And if Windows 7 works on such a system, I don't see why you shouldn't have one installed on it instead of any of the older Windows.

Or you could go for Linux (it's free after all).

But whatever you choose, don't let it be Windows Vista!

Definitely Windows XP. It's much better supported than 98, and 7 wouldn't run well on that archaic monster.

According to the specs on the HP web site, you could install Windows 98, ME or XP on that machine with no problem.

I would go with Windows XP. Since you can longer obtain Windows XP, do you have a copy of it to install?

Before installing Windows XP I would go to the HP web site and download the software and hardware drivers for Windows XP on that machine. That way you can install them once you install Windows XP.

As far as upgrading, there really isn't much you can do to make it go faster. You could possibly add more memory, but I do not think it would make that much of a difference. You could get a hard drive with more capacity but make sure its a IDE and not a SATA hard drive. Do the hard drive upgrade before you install Windows to save yourself some trouble.

Other than that there is not a lot more I can say.

Bigger HDD, or perhaps slave another PATA drive to the one that you have. More memory as well, provided that your system isn't alread maxed out. As for an OS, there's this available as a free Download, which is probably the easiest way to start using an OS that is much more secure than Windows.

Buy a bigger hard drive; they're dirt cheap. Then install Debian Squeeze. 2GB is plenty for Debian, so no pressing need to upgrade the RAM.

My favourite is (K)Ubuntu but I using win7~ for all day & "linux" for banking etc.

Not really if he had a intel dual-core he could run Windows 7 on 32bit. And the disk space would defiantly need an upgrade.

50 bucks can give you a really large hard drive and you can easily run Windows 7 on it. You have the right hardware except the hard drive. Your integrated graphics are fine too. I'd recommend installing two more gigs of RAM to get the most out of your 64 bit processor. Of course that means buying the 64 bit version of Windows 7 too.

If you buy Windows 7 Professional it has a windows xp mode. That means you do not need to buy windows xp or duel boot. You do have to install that mode if you need it. The full install of Windows 7 Pro takes about 20 gigabytes so yes as stated by others get a bigger hard drive. The other hardware to buy would be a better video card not sure what that computer can handle but any card with 128 megabytes of video ram or more will help alot

Win 7 comes with 32 and 64 bit discs. Even if you just buy a key from Microsoft or get one through MSDNAA, it is accepted for either mode.

40GB is fine if he won't store craploads of films on his computer.

Just upgrade yo RAM and stick Windows 7 on that bad boy.

I really think Windows 7 might be too much for this system if you want it too run without slowing down. Also consider what you plan to use the computer for.
