A Rant That Had A Long Time Coming

I'm probably in the wrong section to post such a thread, but I would like to get this off my chest.

This whole 'Ryan Cleary' incident, has now in my eyes gotten ridiculous.

They are now saying he is diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but two things spring to my mind when I heard this piece of news.

1. They have faked such a diagnosis in order to win the public's heartstrings "just because of Gary McKinnon", when clearly, anyone can play "the awkward recluse".
2. He does have Asperger's and they're playing the card to see if he gets off with a lighter sentence despite such a deliberate and heinous crime.

Now I'm not saying Gary McKinnon is playing for the camera, but there is enough evidence to suggest his hacking was merely curiosity.

Ryan Clearly on the other hand, was part of the hacking group "LulzSec" who hack such organizations "for the lols", and for other complicated, internet-based humour for which I can't be bothered to go into detail to.

What it all boils down to is the fact that now people with Asperger's Syndrome are going to labeled with yet ANOTHER stereotype. Being Cyber-Criminal masterminds, and that pisses me off! As well as being in my county Essex, we are now known as such people as well as stupid Wotsit Airheads!!

Ryan knows his involvement was wrong, and there's no denying that. Christ, the kid's my age, lives near me, and went to the neighbouring school. I personally didn't know him, but if anyone does, can they clarify his condition was recognized before this whole incident?

I'm also not excluding or making any exception for Gary McKinnon's case, as what he also did was against the law, but surely that was through the error of the American Government's security. They had blank passwords, and any basic hacker could've gone through them.

Ryan's evergrowing case? I doubt he was 'just curious' to see what would happen if the whole Playstation Network collapsed on its arse.

Yes, my research is flawed, but I hate how the media get hold of such stories, and blow them out of proportion! I'm incredibly lucky to live in such a country of Democracy otherwise I wouldn't be able to rant this.

This concerns me, because I hate stereotyping, especially of Asperger's, and Autism.

Feel free to correct me on this rant, and further develop my questions.

The "deliberate and heinous crime" bit was meant to be sarcasm.

I was quite annoyed when I wrote this.

As reading back most parts aren't clear and it doesn't make much sense to anyone else.

And I understand the annoyance. The media does tend to make a big deal out of all of this stuff, and throwing Asperger's into the mix only makes it worse.

No need to delete this because it's still a very good general discussion topic, even if the original post was kind of rant-y and sarcastic.

My own son has been a hacker all his life, so it hits close to home, even though he does not have Aspergers and neither do the vast majority of his hacker friends.

Don't people with Asperger's have some sort of need to follow the rules?
And know what is right and wrong.

If he does have Asperger's for real, then I guess the punishment was OK, remove all access to his obesession, however how does Asperger's prevent you from going to jail anyways, even for a little while?
If not, then it was no punishment at all and he should go to jail for what he did.

I have been reading those "Anon vs Ryan" stories and it doesn't justify it, even if it was for the revenge.


I myself have though of commiting crimes on the internet but since I'm too paranoid and feel the need to follow rules, I can't do it even if I wanted to.

Conventionally, punishment follows proof of guilt. Not the other way around.

Didn't anyone check his computer to confirm it?
He was part of Anonymous and claims to be part of LulzSec. So basicly he confessed to do the hacking? (to news sources or court? I don't know)
However LulzSec said they only used IRC server hosted on Ryan's home PC only, nothing more.

Worth reading it all. It looks more like he was hung out to dry by LulzSec because he pissed them off.
I expect that's part of what's going on now.
Unfortunately our "boys in blue" sometimes come down like a ton of bricks, and I think this quote from the article likely sums up the extent of it all:
