So, before I met all_white and made my promise not to steal online anymore, my old laptop died.

At first I thought it was a boot system virus, but soon found out that it was a hard ware problem.
It's a CQ61 311AX Laptop

Basically my laptop had a lot of issues with over heating (My fault, I never expected something like this to happen, so it didn't bother me if it reached 90 degrees all the time, haha)

Now please don't hate me for this.
I've downloaded Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit/32-bit, Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit/64-bit, Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and I own two original XP discs, both Windows XP and Professional 32 bit.

None of them worked (I had a pre-installed laptop).
In the end I installed Linux Mint which is probably the best thing for me, because all_white wouldn't want me to steal anymore anyways, and I agree with her, I don't want to steal anymore~♥


My main problem with Linux Mint though is, my Laptop just isn't compatible with Linux Mint. It has a lot of issues with the wireless (It has to flicker on and off constantly for it to work) no problem with that, and I have to type in "eject -t" in the terminal to eject my CD out of the laptop, again, I'm fine with that.

But one thing is annoying me. I've been messing around with the OS a bit and made it look like Windows 7. Main problem is I installed a Chinese language pack.
I decided to change it back to English and didn't know how to. It frooze up when I tried uninstalling Chinese.
I restarted the computer by force, now half is Chinese and half is English.
I reinstalled Chinese and uninstalled it to see what would happen, the other half still stays. I don't feel like doing a Fresh install again. I just went through the trouble to install all this other stuff on it :/

The easiest solution would, unfortunately, be a clean reinstall. I'm not all that familiar with Mint, but I use Ubuntu and it works very smoothly for me. (My only issues I've ever had were driver-related, and once I managed to install my wireless drivers with ethernet, everything was great)

Wireless hardware can sometimes cause problems but it's possible to have Linux use the Windows drivers for your WiFi.

It's aimed at Ubuntu, but the basic idea should still be clear (and Mint already has ndiswrapper installed).
You may also need to check out the link to the ndiswrapper Wiki (end of article) if it proves more troublesome.

I used ndiswrapper plus Windows drivers on an Athlon-based laptop, which has some proprietary WiFi chipset - it worked like a charm!

A re-installation shouldn't be necessary.

Alternatively there is this: http://isis.poly.edu/~qiming/chinese-de ... howto.html but it goes into a lot of detail and much of this has probably already been done in Mint. It might still be worth checking out the first two steps, but I don't know how closely Mint follows Debian so can't say if it's worth (or necessary) checking out the later steps. I'd guess not.

Tried installing Katya [Linux mint v11] without codecs from iso under VMware player [free edition] but it asked me for a username and password even though the install process on VMware process happened automatically -anyone know the defaults

also have wireless problem which happened recently on both Ubuntu and when I installed linux mint whereby the wireless icon moves up and down and doesnt connect to my laptops wireless connection [tried on 2 or 3 laptops so far]
