Just from looking at this without knowing the ins and outs of the case, I'm really very wary indeed of people getting themselves retrospective diagnoses as an excuse. He knew what he did was wrong and did it anyway.

And therefore should be punished. Asperger's Syndrome is not a psychosis.

A guy I use to play Dungeons & Dragons with and somtimes hung out with had a past arrest record for child molestation and for possessing child pornography. He also was found to have cameras hidden in the bathroom at the computershop he worked at. He tried to blame it all on his High Functioning Autism he said he could not help himself because of it at least that is what he said in the court documents I found online. He never told any of us this about himself. I asked him for his e-mail address one day and he gave me some story that he suffered from a computer addiction and no longer used a computer I just thought he did not want me to have his e-mail. When I got home I did a google search of his name and I was suprised that even though I mispelled his first and last name his sex offender registry listing still popped up. It had his picture and current address on the registry so there was no mistaking it. I stopped hanging out with right there and then. It turned out part of his parole conditions he could no longer use a computer without supervision. When we made characters on my comuter for D&D he always made sure I was with him because he said he was afraid he would mess my setings up and I was known for meltdowns. Now I run google checks on everyone I meet.

He blames his sexual prefences on his HFA but he shows no sign of being obssessed with a certain topic. He also seemed too social to me I think his autism might have been fabricated by his lawyer to minamize his sentance. Autism is not an excuse to ignore what is wrong or evil autistics usually have average or above average IQ's so we should know better.

If he is guilty then he needs to be punished, I do not think that AS removes a person's ability to know right from wrong.

If he does get sent to prison then I think that he should be kept out of the general population for his own protection.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

Quote for truth. I specialize in computer security (still in school though), and I know how to write malware. I know how to perform a DoS service attack and have the resources to do so. I also have aspergers. Yet I don't act on this knowledge knowing full well there are serious consequences for doing so. It is a choice.

I think one of the reasons for diagnosing this person is because it was a non-violent crime, and they don't want him with the general prison population. I really hope they don't use it as an excuse for the behavior or even a lighter sentence.

Not quite as notorious and sinister as is being reported:

Also, I think he'd already been diagnosed as having Asperger's before all this blew up.

So you didn't read the Guardian article?
Oh well.

This changes my opinion on the subject. So Ryan Clearly was arrested due to claims by the hacker group Anonymous? I would think that wouldn't be enough evidence to warrant an arrest.

I did read the Guardian article, and to be honest, it was blind rage. It made me laugh how they translate the word 'fag' as prude though.

Also forgive the pretentiousness, but this is going to seriously damage the reputation of residents who live in Essex, as well as people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome.

"Ooh, don't let him anywhere near a computer, he could get involved with a Hacking Organization and bring down the government!"

Ooh, I dunno - probably not.
The people I know just tend to associate my intense interest in computers as part of the AS package and don't make anything of it. I suspect it's much the same generally, or people simply don't care about any of it.

 Yeah, it's pathetic.
What really pisses me off is the way that the 800lb gorilla in the room is ignored - DDOS aside, botnets wouldn't be possible if the OS was worth calling an OS.

Excuses, excuses ... he's still guilty.

Lulzsec/Anonymous are an oxymoron. Childish yet complex.

How Ryan managed to get dragged into this mess somewhat baffles me. :?

It's sort of like the real-life equivalent of a boy deliberately hanging out with (who he thinks are) "the cool kids/friends" hanging around alleyways doing drugs, when clearly they are up to no good.

In this hypothetical reality, poor Ryan has somewhat been 'peer-pressured' into drug-running and hosting dens in and around his house before the rest of them split with the drugs in his hands, BANG! Comes the happy-go-lucky Police and arrest him.

We'll just have to wait until this case further evolves.
