I can't drive. It is likely something I will never be able to do. On the other hand, it would be nice to go to places. Do you think the Google Car will become good enough for it to be assistive technology for fellow cybernetephobic autistics? Is it already there?

What is a google car? Do you give it a destination via googlemaps, and it drives you there? Sounds like a development for the future. See also; google toilets

The Google car (as seen here) is an experimental self-guiding robotic vehicle, using cameras and laser and radar sensors to watch for traffic, and (probably) Google Maps to follow the roads. Ideally, when approved, a Google car will be capable of driving without human intervention as far as its tank will take it.

I do see this as valid assistive technology, as well as something that will make the streets and highways safer once it's been implemented widely - computers don't get drunk, distracted, or tired, nor are they subject to road rage. They don't text on the road, and they don't need to look away from traffic to retune the radio.

Of course, any wireless links will need to be well encrypted, lest some punk script-kiddie decide it'd be fun to use the Google cars on the freeway to play Demolition Derby...
