It happens. It doesn't mean you have malware on your system. It's more like getting spam. Even the spam that seems to come from your e-mail address doesn't mean anything. (
Unless it is sent to people in your address book...)
The only time you should worry is if you let them contact you.
Then, you could get something nasty on your system. But right now, it sounds like they're just messing with the messenger system to try to trick / pressure people into opening the door. Don't.
As long as you don't open that door, don't worry.
