Lame science reporting, but it's an interesting topic for me: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/new-%C2%A3210- ... 52406.html

Will it ever be cheaper than intensively farmed meat? I think so. It's not so much that we're going to run out of space to keep farm animals in, but more that we'll run out of food to feed them with. Grain prices have been coming down recently, but that's due to a bumper corn crop this year - in the wider scheme of things, prices are rising. GMOs will help us to produce more crops but we will need them to feed people as population rises.

Would I eat it? Hell to the yes.

What do you think?

I think PETA will soon be in a row with the anti-GMO crowd over this one.

But would I try it? Maybe ... but only because I'm shifting my diet away from animal products for health reasons.

What specific reasons? I mean, how would artificial meat be healthier? I mean there will be less hormones and contaminants, but in terms of fat, it depends on how much they add in.

Cholesterol. I'm at an age when cholesterol becomes an important and potentially life-threatening substance. All animal-based food products contain some amount of cholesterol - some more than others.

If they could genetically modify vat-grown meat to produce no cholesterol at all, then not only would I eat it, but I'd buy into the company!

Here's a webarticle from the University of Maastricht about it.

I would certainly try it and understanding how it works, I don't see any problems. These stem cells are pre-programmed during gastrulation. They are present in normal beef as well.

What I would like to know is if pure muscle tastes as good as minced beef. Is the fat that makes it so tasty, or the muscle?

I only eat meat-flavored vegetable products, like veggie burgers and soy bacon. I'm against GMO-type stuff. It can't be healthy for you. :?

Where's the evidence to say it's not?

It's not GMO. GMO is prohibited in the EU, one of the major reasons why a free trade agreement with the USA might fail.

Virtually every grain eaten today is a genetic modification of the original wild varieties.

Even though I know it's likely perfectly safe, I don't know if I could bring myself past the "Ew" factor. It's hard enough for me to drink apple juice that says "Contains 0% juice" on the bottle.

as far as cholesterol is concerned, beware of throwing out the baby with the bathwater- a certain amount of cholesterol is necessary for bodily maintenance [and for men, cholesterol is needed for the formation of testosterone, as well]. anyways, I would certainly eat faux meat.

That means what is in the bottle is 100 percent water. You are paying juice prices for something you can get out of your tap.

I think he probably means 0% sugar or something like that. I doubt that a bottle of apple juice would say 0% juice on the bottle.

Reminds me of the episode of Better Off Ted where they tried to grow meat in a petri dish.

No, it says 0% juice lol, it's all artificial flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives.

I think it's a great idea! Take out the suffering element. I'm not a vegetarian, but I do dislike the way slaughter animals are treated.
