I again invented something. Sadly as many of you can relate I have almost friends to share it with. With about $400, Amazon, another website, and two local hardware shops I made a wood stove which produces no smoke. It's brick lined, an upper and lower burn chamber, pressurized air jetted to specific locations, and when I showed my only buddy, a fellow video gamer, his jaw dropped at the complexity of construction. Soon it will have copper piping and a legal open loop system (city code folks know me well), and as usual, all done by my hand. In the sweet silence of my own little plot of land I find myself through inventions and maintenance of my stuff. I cut and gather all my own firewood too. I built a wood shed to last about 50 years which stores about 4 years worth of firewood. The stove is made of parts I can readily buy when they wear out. I'm curious to see what wears out first. I'd patent it except for the cost of shipping and the liability to make it U.L. certified are prohibitive. For now I'll burn my firewood to heat my house and DHW at near 100% efficiency. It's a lonely fascinating existence I have. I love that I can "see" systems, then build them. I don't love how wrong relationships go, but at least I can fall back on my inventions to keep me warm. Not sure why I wrote this, It's not to brag, just to be heard by those who may relate in personal yet similar ways to invetions being like family members.

Your invention is amazing! Really, and not just saying that. Could you sell your woodstove (like via online marketing), targeting especially rural places? Look, I personally know quite a many Alaskans that would be REALLY interested in what you've got. You are talented (& it's OK to brag :) ). A clean burning woodstove that conversed wood is real asset. I don't much about patenting and all, but I bet you could market your woodstove by yourself without too much hassle. Just in time for winter too. Anyhow, all the best.

Your wood stove is no where close to 100 percent efficient.

The only way to make your wood stove one hundred percent efficient is to convert the mass of the wood completely to energy.

It was with purpose that I put the word nearly in front of the number 100 in the title of this post. I know it is not 100% efficient it is nearly 100% efficient. After a year of college thermodynamics I know hundred percent efficiency is impossible. Criticism is mind bogglingly easy. Thank you for your criticism.

I don't think he meant E=MC^2 efficient.
Imagine total conversion of a single small log. Devastation.

The heating industry has a different concept of efficiency that is related to emissions. This is not an interest, so I don't recall the details but I did see some comparative efficiency numbers for different furnaces a few years ago.

You are both right and I want to apologize. It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Combustion efficiency: is defined as the amount of heat released during combustion over the heating value of the fuel burned.
I meant to say that with no smoke (over the last 90% of the burn time), [at startup smoke is always present], I have made combustion efficiency as high as I can make it. When no smoke or creosote is produced that means that all the energy of the wood is turned into heat. I am making nearly "Complete Combustion" by giving the wood enough oxygen to fully react. I'm also giving the burn process enough time via a series of stacked ceramic burn chambers to reach full temperature. Also with the copper pipe to come, I will be gaining heated air and heated water from the process. To further gain energy from the wood would be chasing diminishing returns at this point.
I'm sorry to you ruveyn, you were correct. I'm learning about getting anger.
Bascially here's the design. introduce super preheated air (from the exhaust), make longer than normal (stacked upon themselves) ceramic burn chambers with high temp ceramics, and control the air jetted in, (more at the start, less once going, and try to gather all the heated air and with copper piping, heated water as possible.

The ash is not being converted to energy. Thus not all of the wood is being converted to energy. In fact if you measure the gases released by combustion plus the oxidized residue (ash) the total weight of this is greater than the original weight of the wood. That is because the wood is combining with oxygen. The wood is transformed but not consumed.

Solo: you have nothing to apologize for.

Its obvious that your talking about latent chemical energy , and not about latent nuclear energy.


It takes work to lift a rubber ball to the top of a ten story building 100 feet high.

If you drop it you get some of that energy back as work- work in the form of the ball bouncing back up again. But the ball will only bounce back -say- fifty feet.

What you're talking about is making a more efficient ball, and getting it to bounce 80, 90, or even the whole 100 feet.

( the lifting of the ball to the roof is the equivalent of the tree photosnthesizing for years. And the bouncing is equivlant to the heat from the fire from burning the wood).

Rev is saying the equivalent of "if the ball's mass (one pound of rubber) were converted directly into energy (E equals MC squared) you would have a million megaton bomb go off. Which is (a) true, but (b) obviously irrelevent to what you're talking about.

The world switched from steam trains to diesel trains in part because diesels get 60 percent of the energy latent in fossil fuels, and steam engines only get 15 percent. But niether kind converts matter directly into energy. Its obvious that you're talking about making stoves less like steam trains, and more like diesals (or beyond), and not about turning a stove into a matter-antimatter reactor.

Solo_Operator, that is awesome!

I don't have an interest in it the same way you might (I'm very much into computers and electronics), but I certainly can relate to imagining a device and creating it. I can tell you from experience that it takes a lot more intelligence to see the parts as a whole than it does to tear the whole into parts.

People who would use knowledge to break something apart merely lack the intelligence to add any value. It's like watching a two year old with a phone. They know how to put it to their ear, because they have seen their parents do it, but otherwise they are tossing it around. I wouldn't give them any attention.

You did an amazing thing you should be proud.
