Will 120V 60 Hz elec. device in a 115V 50 Hz country work?

Depends on the device, but generally I'd say yes. If the device runs on say 12 V DC via a transformer there wouldn't be a problem with the frequency difference and only a trivial difference in the output voltage of the transformer / rectifier.

So what is the gadget ?

So it actually runs on low voltage DC? What does it say on the power supply, its rating is often stamped into the plastic.

a) is 115v (Supply Voltage) between 100 and 240v (Device Voltage)? Yes
b) is 50hz (Supply Frequency) either 50 or 60 hz (Frequencies on device)? Yes

If A and B are true, it will work.
If A is true and B is false, it *might* work and it's generally safe to try.
If A is false and B is true, it won't work, and it's very likely you will destroy something by trying.

Supply voltage is supposedly +/- 6% acc. to the Co. involved.

They include this table which I do not understand.

I find nothing that suggests that their supply frequency varies but idk sh*t.

Voltage fluctuates mostly because of voltage drop. Also sometimes if you're hooking up to a generator.

Variation in frequency is called harmonic distortion (THD), and is almost always <0.1%. Basically, unless you already know that you care about THD - you don't care. 99.999% of the time you don't care.

That chart you provided is a list of different ways to hook something up, which makes me really curious what you're plugging this thing into that you're getting these figures from. My guess is a generator?

110/115/220/230 no longer exist. everything is now ether 120 or 240. in 3 phase environment. voltages of 208 and 277 still exist. there are several industrial voltage ranging from 380-880 with 415 and 480 being the most common.

There are two different mains frequencies use in the world. 50Hz and 60Hz. the only effect that they have is is that transformers will hum at different pitches. AC induction motor will run at different speeds. For example, A motor that runs at 1800 rpm on 60Hz will run at 1500 rpm on 50Hz. Also, electric clocks will run 10 minutes per hour faster or slower if used on the wrong frequency.

This is an international forum, and those voltages absolutely do exist out in the world.

And frequency does matter a great deal in certain classes of devices. It's not just clocks.

That is false. THD is not changes in frequency. THD measures how much distortion or deformation that there is in the sinewave.

Furthermore, when you look on the Power Supply, you should see a list of acceptable voltages. I've noticed that most power supplies that ship with computers and Cellphones are universal types which run on all voltages; --This will be listed on the PSU Brick or wall wart. Example,(From the computer I'm using to post this)

Input/Entree: 100-240V~1.0A 50-60Hz.
Output/Sortie: 16V---5.0A

This info is going to be on the first line of the PSU specs.

The only thing you will need is either an IEC cable with the appropriate plug for the country that you're in, or barring that, a plugin adapter that works with the plug on your cable and the socket you plan to plug in to.


Also FWIW, some couintries have multiple voltages,(Hello Brazil!) or use sockets identical to North American triple prong plugs, but run at 240VAC instead of North American standard 120VAC.
