Its not just submariners who hot bunk, happened a lot on sailing ships. Interestingly I visited Chatham historic docks last month and took a tour on HMS Ocelot. Not only did they hot bunk, they also did not shower for 3 months and only had room for 1 change of clothes. Also some of the bunks were very small.
Cramped inside a sub like that would be my idea of living hell. Get Das Boot, its a great film and will give you a really good idea of how life was in ww2. The modern boats are a lot bigger, but still bit cramped.
