Is there a way to make Windows 8.1 as dark as 8 could get?

I like to watch things in before or while trying to go to sleep. On Windows 8, I could lower the brightness all the way down, then click on the, er.... white block thing (no idea what it's called), drag it up a little and then back down. Doing so would allow me to make it even darker so I could actually watch things in a dark room without hurting my eyes. But ever since my computer got fixed and the guy, without asking me, upgraded to 8.1, I haven't been able to do that. Last night I had to turn on my TV as well, just to make the room a little brighter so it wouldn't hurt my eyes during the day time scenes of the anime I was watching. I know there was a short period that I could go back to 8 but I didn't know it had a limited time, or that it'd be so short and sometimes I just listen to music in bed, so by the time I realized I couldn't make it as dark, it was too late.
Is there any way to make it how it used to be? I dont know why they'd change it, it was great before but it sucks now.

I use a program called Pangobright. Just download it from the developers site. It can allow you to dim the monitor right from the task bar. Works on windows 7 and 10, never used windows 8 but im sure it works there too.

I use F.lux
aside from being able to reduce the brightness to below normal settings, it also gives the option of changing the hue of your screen, like putting a color filter over it: i like the yellow-ish tint, even during daytime settings. This makes a difference comparable to that between new and recycled white paper, the latter being a lot easier on the eyes to watch and read.
