This is for a School Project so please reply. Heres the Four big
computer giants in the Industrial.
1.Dell
2.E-Machines
3.Compaq/ HP
4.Acer

So our these companies any good. Are these companies just coming out with propriatory pieces of junk that just look like
good computers. Dell which is on top of the computer world right
now see pretty cheap computers. E-Machines, HP, and Compaq
are also getting a lot of there money from the low-end, Wal-Mart
style computers. However is $279 too good to be true for this
E-Machine Computer being advertised at Radio Shack.

Windows Vista Home Basic
AMD Sempron 3800+ Processor
512MB DDRRAM
120 GB Hard Drive

I am just saying that these prices are too good to be true. If Companies just put less money on false advertising we wouldn`t be this way. In 2006 a line of low-end E-Machine computers had
faulty power supplies. Somebody i knew who had a emachine had
a fried motherboard within the 1st week. E-Machines also didn`t repair it. If these companies are going to advertise warranties why aren`t these four companies giving warrranties. Instead several computer manufacturers are suckering the consumer to buy low quality crap just because of a small price tag.

If I were you I wouldn't get an emachine, and for the price of course your getting junk but if you don't do a lot they're fine I suppose.

Agreed, avoid the EMachines. I have no idea of what current HP stuff is like but their Compaq stuff is their low end, but they will more or less function for a couple of years.
You should also consider Toshiba, if you plan on getting a notebook.

Gamefreak,

PC companies such as Dell, Gateway, E-machines, etc don't actually "make" their PC's. They simply purchase the various components (hard drive, power supply, motherboard...) from the actual manufacturers and connect them all together in a case. (They don't even make the case.) So whether you purchase a Dell or a Gateway or E-machine or whatever has nothing to do with the quality and reliability of the machine.

In purchasing a PC, I would suggest that you purchase the machine with the best combination of warranty, support, and price.

Lenovo is a Chinese knock-off brand for IBM computer. So far, they've not had too terrible of a reputation despite their low price and 3rd world manufacturing location, but have not had the solid reliability of USA designed and built IBM computers

E-machines is actually the "Cheapie" nameplate that Gateway uses for retail sales, and it shows! Probably foreign built too just like the Lenovos.

Acer typically makes proprietary computers with odd size motherboards and stuff. They're usually pretty reliable tho. For a better Acer machine, you may want to look for an A-open machine...these are the industry-standard versions of acer computers and are typically sold at small independent computer shops. Acer also makes computers for old-time computer manufacturer Unisys. Acer stuff is made both in the USA and it Taiwan, where they are based out of.

HP and Compaq are one in the same now. These computers have hair fairly good reliability, but it doesn't top how good they were back in the "good ol days" of the 80's and 90's. The Compaq nameplate is typically used for the lower end machines, and the laptops. Both companies have been known for making oddball components that cannot be upgraded with standard parts. I remember having to order special RAM chips for Compaqs and Gateways because ordinary SIMMS and DIMMS wouldn't work in them. I've heard they use Taiwanese manufacturer ASUS to build motherboards for them...ASUS has a pretty good reputation in the industry.

I have an eMachine I bought last year with 512MB of RAM. What they didn't tell me up front is that 128MB of the ram is used by the video card, leaving 384MB for apps. I speeded it up a LOT when I upgraded to 2GB of RAM and the buffers were a decent size. Whatever computer you get at this point should be expandable to 4GB for the eventual upgrade to Vista.

Aside from that and having to replace my mouse two weeks ago, it works fine.
