I am having a major crisis on my computer upstairs, i was casually browsing, and suddenly everything went haywire. A window called bantool popped up and i could not do anything apart form turn the PC off at the mains.

When i logged back on, i found the bantool window came up again and i was unable to access anything, the only thing i could get on was Task manager, i was frozen out of everything, i tried rebooting in safe mode and using system restore, to no avail, now i can't even get on in normal mode.

I know this virus is a trojan, and my anti-virus software must have expired. But i am completed stuck as to how i can fix my computer. I am currently downloading a new anti-virus program I can take upstairs. But i will only be able to get it on in safe mode. If even that works. Can anyone suggest anything at all to aid my situation. Thanks in advance!

Regards

Topher

Sounds like your doingng the right thing.
You should be able to install and run your new antivirus program in safe mode If tou can get safe mode with networking it may well install the latest updates as well.
just don't be impatent and let it do a full scan before trying normal mode.

Sadly i downloaed a few of those, and when i tried to get them on in safe mode the USB drive was not read, so sadly i had to restore to factory settings, so I lost everything, although it was my fault for not updating my anti-virus programming. So my embarressment was immense, most of ti was junk i lost, the real losses was my saved games and my pictures, saved games i can manage, the pictures Where what hit my hardest, but i would guess the mos timportant ones i had backed up online, so i can restore most of what i lost all around.

sorry to hear that Topher.

AVG has a free antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

To backup, I have a second hard disk, with only important files being backed up about every week. I also use an online service about twice a week.

to backup I use Syncback (also freeware): http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html

To backup data before reformatting/restoring, you could use a live linux CD that should let you copy your files from a hard drive to a USB drive.

Try Avast! [www.avast.com]. It's free and works great.

Yes indeedy. I often suggest INSERT. It's small, and comprehensive.
