My lap top screen gets verticle lines on it when I'm using it and it's getting worse. I was told the screen has to be replaced and that it will cost anywhere from 75 to 100 dollars. Does anyone have experience with this??

If your laptop is old enough to start having vertical lines in its display, then it is likely old enough to be replaced completely. In my experience, replacing the screen only delays the inevitable failure of the entire device.

Yes, computers should be considered disposable devices.

Newer computers are cheaper and faster. And a new computer will generally have less software issues, if you avoid major new releases of the operating system.

How old is it and what do you use it for?

If you only use it for simple stuff like internet browsing and typing on word or whatever, I have seen light simple style laptops that cost around 100-300$.

But if you play games on your laptop then you'd probably want to save up for something a little more heavy duty.

I mean if its a new computer then I could see it maybe being worth getting the screen replaced, but if its old and the screen isn't working right it would certainly be best to get a new laptop. Or you could look into used/refurbished laptops.

Also though don't just throw the old computer away, take it to a recycling place that accepts old computers. Lol I still have an old laptop that doesn't work because I procrastinated finding a place to take it.

As Fnord said, the laptop is unfortunately likely to fail anytime soon. This could also be caused by the graphic card (which can be a separate component or, for most laptops, built-in the motherboard, which makes it impossible to replace).

Now it depends on your finance, I'd recommend changing the whole thing but it will likely cost much more than 100$. If you decide to replace the screen only, I would recommend you to pay a professional to do it. It will only add a few $ to the bill, and changing it by yourself if you have no prior experience playing with hardware will be annoying and you risk destroying it all.

In a past life as a Dell service technician I saw issues like this.

Flex cable poorly seated or becoming damaged can cause the issue, or screen or gpu might be the cause, in order of likelihood. No tech is guaranteed a fix after they try swapping out any one of the above.

I'd take the advice others mentioned and start thinking about a replacement rather than repair. An external monitor might serve as a temporary work around eg if rescuing files.
