From Anton / WhatDaMath, it looks like China's been leading the most vigorous reforestation project in the world - on the order of billions of trees per year. They're getting some criticism that what they're doing may stress local water tables and rearrange rather than solve problems. Their aim seems to be containing and, if possible, greening the Gobi desert:

Yeah, I think the stuff that's going on the pacific northwest is probably of higher quality in that they're paying attention to which species create pro-social relationships, exchange carbon dioxide at their roots, etc.. China did what central planning does best - ie. taking a narrow approach and hitting it out of the ballpark.

I thought this was so awesome. >_>

Motivated me to donate actually, albeit I am questioning how far $1 a tree gets us.

China needs trees there to stop dust from Gobi blow to their big cities. The project is quite practical.
Yes, it can be advertised as virtue signalling. It does not take anything from its practicality.
I've read many of the planted trees die but well, there is much more to do than planting trees when you want to stop desertification of a region.
