Help with wireless network

Today i was getting my friends computer set up on with a wireless card.
The computer is a Windows 98SE [ Yes, i got all the updates and IE6] However i can`t get it set up on the wireless network. I also tried the Linksys Secure EAsy Setup but that won`t work under 98 and ME. So how do i manually set up the card.

The best thing to do is to connect via a lan cable to your router either from your laptop or from another computer on your network.

Your router manual should tell you how to logon to the configuration page.

From there you should be able to select a variety of settings including the ssid key or wireless logon details.

Make a note of the key you have chosen.

Close and reboot/save the router.

Disconnect your lan cable from the laptop.

With your wireless card in and recognised as hardware you should be able to see a new icon on your Task Bar.

Click on it and choose 'Open Wireless connections'

You should be able to see your router and probably some others in the neighbourhood, click on yours.

Enter your password or SSID key and you should connect.

If there are still problems make sure that IE is set to 'Obtain IP address automatically'.

unless the software that came with the card specifically says it's made for windows 98 (or any windows 9x) then wireless won't work. I've ran into this problem before. Windows 98 has no wifi capabilities. (this could have changed in the year since my work with this, but i doubt it since windows 98 has gone out of support). Sorry for yet another edition of computer hell.

I have been able to use a D-Link USB WiFi adaptor on a Win98 computer before, however I tried a Linksys card on my previous laptop (a P133 MMX with 16MB RAM), the D-Link USB adaptor worked on this, however the Linksys card always brought up a blue screen and would never detect anything

My advice is not to try a Linksys card on a Win98 machine

A USB adaptor would be the way to go (but not Linksys in case they have the same problem as the card)

I used to have a Win98 PC a few years back and it worked fine with WiFi.

you guys are right (you don't need me to tell you though). I remember the situation i had like that. It was the specific wifi card I was working with that didn't work for win98. Please disregard my earlier comment.

Certain cards with newer firmware only support the newer versions of the Windows operating systems. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a driver that someone wrote who was in a bad situation like yourself.
