im not sure if this is what ur looking for but heres my opinions on them, all use asian outsourced tech support, emachines tech support is basically same people answering the phone for gateway.

the hardware:

DELL: its an ok computer, average price is good for people who want something to play games on and as the processors get more advanced they no longer have a bad reputation "dell from (rymes with dell and wont say it)"

E-MACHINES: great beginner computer for people who just check their emails and dont spend much time gaming or running multiple applications

my cousin perfers people not buy them, because of the problems with the BIOS and the motherboard (they fry and die)

HP/COMPAQ: great for gaming and multiple applications, tech support will cost you though, they charge like $45 US for 2 weeks worth of help (best you call microsoft for windows operating system problems plus they dont charge)

my review on hp products, its all that my dad will buy when it comes to computers and periferals (scanner beds, printers, fax machines) but only problem is that you may have to un and reinstall driver software before it works properly,

GATEWAY: their tech support is same for emachines (maybe because of a merger?) i have not had much experiance using a gateway but it appears from specs of them that its got some more features then an emachine.

good luck on the project, also have you tried looking at reviews for these computers in pc buyer or smartcomputing or even CPU

good luck sorry in advance if i didnt understand

You could also check Consumer Reports at the library. The technical support was reviewed in June 2007. The last page is the index of articles published in the last year. You may find component data in the June, September and November 2007 issues. Hope this helps. :D

Thanks,i am also thinking of getting some benchmarking software and going into computer shops and tested each companies computers.
First a entry-level model, then a mid-range model, then a high range.
I am also testing Compliance with Office 2007, Openoffice and Adobe Photoshop.

From a technician's point of view :)

I've subcontracted as a Dell @ Home technician (we go to customers' sites to perform warranty parts replacements) - they're fairly reliable units as long as they aren't abused. A few parts are proprietary but personally they're as close to a "clone" as they can be. Dell can replace a "lemon unit" quicker than any of the other brands combined. Dell printers are rebranded Lexmark units. Excellent support system.

E-Machines (cheap, entry-level PC's - think Wal-Mart or Best Buy) - disposable PC's. No major complaint - seen them used by elderly couples and budget families/students.

HP/Compaq: No complaints in their business line as they're very stable units (Compaq EVO / HP Vectra) matter of fact, we've got a few older units still working very strong. Printers can't be killed (LaserJet line) and the Deskjets are very, very reliable.

Gateway - not a huge seller here in Canada, but I've seen a few every now and then. I'd place them above E-Machines. I do believe they've done some sort of alliance with them (correct me if I'm wrong.) Customer service used to be top-rate about 5-6 years ago (they'd bend over backwards to help you out ) and they had a very good support system.

Hope this helps, feel free to IM for any more info :)

.............but the initial installation you usually have to uninstall and reinstall the drivers at least 2 times before the device (printer) has all the functions it needs and stays connected (if networked)
